Guest guest
Well, my danaatty email account is now basically unusable, so I have included my new danasview email address on my site [hidden from most internet spam-bots]. I have re-subscribed to my message boards under this new ID also. So please begin using this new email address if you would like to contact me, danasview On a more positive note: #1, who has spent the last 3 summers insisting that he never wants to learn how to swim, taught himself how to swim this summer. #2 has reached the point of an " awakening " . Has anyone seen the movie " And Your Name is Jonah " ? I saw this movie about 20 years ago. It is about a boy whose parents [and everyone else] believed was retarded, so they placed him in a group home. It is discovered that he is not retarded, he is deaf, so the parents take him home and begin the task of trying to communicate to him the idea that he can communicate with them. At the end of the movie, he finally realizes that he can communicate with people using hand signs. He excitedly runs around pointing at objects and signing their labels. My #2 knows quite a lot of words, and he knows he can say them and communicate, but he would still use only those words necessary to communicate his request. Well, #2 yesterday was excitedly pointing at things [and pictures in books] and saying the words. My other kids got tired of saying " yes, it's a ball " , " yes, it's a tree " , etc. He was also putting several words together, even if it was not *required* to make his point. [For those interested, he reached this milestone because of high doses of vitamin A.] #3 has been entirely clueless about potty training for all of his 6+ years of life. A week ago he said [totally unexpectedly] " poopy toilet " , so we went to the toilet, he took off his pants and pullup, and sat on the toilet. Nothing happened but he was proud of himself LOL. Then he stood up and acted like he would pee [my boys all learned to pee standing up]. Still nothing happened, but he closed the lid, put his pullup and pants back on, and then washed his hands. We have done this for a week now. A few days ago, he pooped in the toilet [the only child I know of, who pooped in the toilet before peeing in the toilet LOL]. Two days ago, he peed in the toilet also. Yesterday, he was entirely potty trained [daytime only, still in pullup at night]. He wore underwear all day without an accident. And he did this all by himself, I had abandoned [again] all efforts to help him learn to use the toilet because he had been entirely clueless. So now after 9-1/2 years of changing diapers, with 3 of those years having 3 kids in diapers, I have no kids in diapers! #4 is still a precocious and somewhat obnoxious 4yo. She is having some transitional difficulties in that all her brothers are demanding my attention to talk to me, and she is accustomed to competition only from #1. Guest guest
Wow, Dana! Yesterday was a fabulous day at your house! What a wonderful email. And Dana, thanks for all that you do for us parents, from tirelessly staying current and providing assistance on many autism lists, to maintaining your website with tons of useful information. AND, you manage to do all of this while you are busy with your 4 kids and continuing to treat them. God bless you.
Guest guest
I think that is beautiful. Congratulations. Knowing our son's central nervous system is affected by swimming similar to the great effects of the trampoline, we are in the process of having a pool built. It's great, the communication part, but it does get tiring for others to reaffirm, that " yes, that is.... " . Potty training is so huge though. Do you attribute everyone's bursts of development to the Vit. A? I returned a batch of Brainchild Nutritionals, they didn't call to confirm I wanted the order ( couple of months went by between order and delivery. This was prior to the introduction of some great staff) Anyway, based on some blood work I and Dr. Goldberg felt ph no longer needed vitamin supplements. That the enzymes and gut healing allowed him to absorb the nutrients/vitamins from his diet. has posted a great deal of info. on this, but I've yet to research it, ( ph was promoted to the next grade level and I'm staying the whole time to help him acclimate. Which means I don't have the break I use to, and I'm too exhausted by the time I get home to do it) I'm half tempted to quit using enzymes myself. I get a bit manic, a little obsessive about things, and can work off 4 hours sleep a night, if I eat gluten and don't take enzymes regularly. Please let us know if it's the Vit. A making a difference for everyone. Guest guest
That is great news Dana! What a good feeling that must be for you. My 3 year old son likes to flush the toilet and when we play with his Fisher Price Little People House he puts everyone on the toilet, but he has no desire to try to use the toilet himself. Did you just wait until your son decided he was ready or did you try to introduce the toilet idea every so often then drop the topic if he refused and then go back to it now and again? Again, congrats! Guest guest
Dana, I sit over here knowing how you must feel to have your son potty trained. It's a tear jerker. We all sit and read posts from parents who are trying so hard to help their kids. It is a life-consuming experience... and the are so many less-fortunate children whose parents do not have the determination, know-how, or clue that they can change the course of their children's lives. Congratulations. You and your family have earned it.
