Hi Dawn:

Well, I didn't have this problem before the surgery, so I am not sure.

I talked with my doc about it, and we decided that I should try having

either 1/2 a sandwich with meat and cheese, or 1/2 a protein shake just

before bed. I tried the sandwich last night, and it seemed to work.

I'm not sure what's causing it, but before the surgery, when I would eat

quite a bit of food, I usually ate dinner pretty late, and then snacked

until bedtime, so I always went to bed full. That could be it too.

Or, I'm not eating enough during the day. Anyway, I will keep playing

with it, until I get it fixed.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Warmly,

Hey

Girlie! First

of all, my congrats to you!! Told ya so! (nah, nah, nah, nah,

nah! :) ).I

don't wake up starving, however we have heard of people who experienced

this prior to surgery, and still are trying coping mechanisms to overcome

their addiction to food, but WON'T give in, as it was an old habit that

got them into trouble and gaining weight in the first place. I'm

sorry I can't help, but exactly what did you eat prior to going to bed?

I for one, have massive nightmares for some stupid reason if I eat too

much spaghetti sauce before bed, unless I wait it out at least 4-5 hours

before going to sleep...DON'T ask me why...just happens...like everything

happens for a reason!!! Congrats

Hunger

Hi there! Me again! I have been spacing out my meals better,

and I think the hunger thing is lessening. But now, I have another

question: in the middle of the night, I wake up starving, and I can't

fall back asleep. After about an hour, I will get up and have something

to eat. Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas how to solve

it?

And just to also share some good news - in my last post I mentioned

that I had gained 3 pounds. Well, I lost it and another 2 to boot!

So, in 5 weeks, I have lost 30 pounds! Pretty good, eh? <grin>

I'm happy.

Thanks!

it is NOT BAD to be hungry, it's NORMAL! LOL! I

guess I wrote that wrong, what I meant, is, some days I have little or

no appetite, other days, I feel like I can continue like the Energizer

you're anything like most woman sweetie, it's called FLUID RETENTION most

likely, and occurs if you're PMSing (I ALWAYS PMS!), high sodium intake,

and not enough water to flush you out.....and/or, eating high caloric foods

over an extended period of time. May

I suggest, tomorrow, eat the protein / healthy b-fast in the a.m., drink

water, snack on a piece of fruit, or something light, then protein for

lunch (maybe tuna on wheat, with lettuce or tomatoes?), a bit of MAYO on

that of course, then maybe some cheese/yogurt for snack, then the whole

rigmarole for dinner? Do

you see a Nutritionist down there? If not, I HIGHLY recommend you

do, they are a HUGE help to me for sure, and I MUST get back to her, as

I tend to fall "off the wagon" just a tad too much lately! If

you're worried about gaining, try this for a few days...its is NORMAL to

go up/down, we're only human sweetie! :) Unless

you're having pain/discomfort, etc., I personally don't think the Dr. call

is necessary, however, I am NOT a Dr. to judge that, only you can make

that decision. Hang

Okay, Dawn, so is it bad to be hungry? I weighed myself today and

I have GAINED 3 pounds since Thurs. Obviously, I am doing something

wrong! HELP!! Any advice will be appreciated. I am calling

my doctor tomorrow cause now, I'm worried.

I'm hungry most of the time too sweetie, trust me, you're NOT alone!

The

only time I sometimes have problems lacking "hunger" is in the

a.m....I'm

NOT a morning person by any means, and rarely ate b-fast until

after

surgery, or if I was TOLD to by some diet authority figure! :)

Today for instance, I was hungry in the a.m., so I had my usual

Cin/Raisin

English Muffin w/pb...then for lunch (ate late), I couldn't stop

eating!!!

Usually, when eating the meats, potatos and veggies, I can eat

a small

portion...today I had SECONDS of a small portion, and made myself

stop, cuz

I was STILL HUNGRY!!! UGH !!

Hi Rayna:

I guess I am the weird one, then, because most

people I have talked to say the same as you - that

they are not hungry. Well, I am! I certainly

don't eat much, but I do feel hunger throughout

I too wake up in the middle of the night and want to eat. Now, I'm

not saying this is your problem but it is mine and this is what I did,

and still do. I feel this is like playing with fire behavior. If I

don't get a hold on it right NOW. It is going to lead to old behavior

eating. If I eat a good dinner at a normal time, NOTHING after 8PM. I

should be able to get through the night without eating. HA!! Not true.

I think because I have use food to cope with life for so long and I can't

do that now the daily little stresses catch up with me when I'm not

looking and that's when I'm sleeping and tired and not very strong to

fight the urge. When I do wake up I really feel like I'm hungry. I know

I'm not because by the time the morning comes I'm not hungry anymore and

I know what I've eaten during the day. I'm not starving myself. I eat

plenty of food so this is not hunger.

I fight to not eat at this time. If I don't it is going to snowball

on me eventually. The problem is not what I need to eat, it is the

fact, I need to eat. So I need to get a hold on it now. Because I am

putting up such a good fight I am up all night and that is why I think I

have started to grind my teeth but this happens now all day long. I am

going to try one of those mouth guards for that. BUT I refuse to give in

to the eating, Now I'm not saying I am perfect because I too sometimes do

give in and end up eating just to make it easier on myself. But all in

all, I'm not making it easier. I'm making it harder and gaining control

is going to take that much longer. That is why I need to get a hold on

this behavior. I don't think there is a cue. I do think I can get

control over it though. I really hope I explained this right and hope it

helps.

Thank you for your thoughts Pam. I agree with you about getting control

of bad/old behaviors. I have fallen into that trap too. It

sounds like you have some good strategies to deal with it, and it sounds

like you are on the road to success. In my case, the issue turned

out to be a bit simpler. I just wasn't eating enough. When

I started keeping a food log, I saw that there were some large gaps and

I just added some more calories into the evening meal. That seems

to have fixed the problem for me.

Again, thanks.

This sounds crazy, but as I was sitting here checking email, I had a knee-jerk

response go in the kitchen and eat. I was disappointed to realize that I wasn't

hungry and didn't need to eat. It was like, " oh darn, what else can fill this

hole? " And what is the hole, anyway? Stress, boredom? Its' funny that all those

diet ads in the magazines talk about " Curbing Hunger! " " Foods that Satisfy! "

etc. For me its not really hunger at all that's my problem. In fact, I have

always thought that if I only ate when I was hungry, I'd be thin. How do I deal

with this?

Katy, you are onto a big point of IE - (self) discovering what drives are behind

the 'eat' signals that are NOT (body) hunger. Some people journal, others just

'sit' with themselves and quietly ask what is it that I'm feeling (other than

hunger). If you think back to what was happening to you just before the 'eat'

signal came on you, that could be a clue too.

Katy,

You said it perfectly.

(1) What are the holes?

(2) What else can fill them?

(3) How do I deal with this?

There are famous sayings about asking the right questions, and I think you're

asking all the right questions. And there don't seem to be easy or quick

answers to those questions.

This week, I am paralyzed by the number of holes in my life, and one let-down

after the next, in my attempts to find new ways to fill them. I have Multiple

Chemical Sensitivities and acute chronic illness and am mostly housebound and

isolated. I am overwhelmed by the number of holes, and the number of let-downs,

so that I feel hopeless, to be honest.

Best wishes to you,

Sue

it's funny this should come up today. I've had a bit more anxiety than usual

about things this lately -- facing a move across the country, maybe some time

living without my husband because of work, having to talk to potential employers

next year, etc. and also I have really wanted chocolate chip cookies, or

something chocolate. Wow, could there be a connection there?

believe it or not I probably wouldn't have made that connection much before now.

I know that's a craving and not hunger, but I mention it because I haven't

actually had a chocolate chip cookie, because when I realized I've actually been

hungry I knew it wasn't going to do much to make me less hungry. But I'll

probably make some tomorrow.

All this to say, I pretty much only eat when I'm hungry, and I'm still not thin.

That is frustrating and it's also frustrating to no longer have the thing that

once would have made you feel better, at least sort of.

Thanks to everyone for feedback, I have always been too scared and, well, ok,

too technologically impaired to join an on-line group. You all make it easy. I

am starting to believe this can help. At this point for me, I'm ok with not

having big weight loss. If I can stop the feelings of failure that go along with

the completely non-intuitive ways that I have been eating-I will see that as

positive.

Kim, when I was just getting started with IE, feelings of 'failure' were big

stumbling blocks for me. What I learned to do to overcome those were to remind

myself of the positive changes I had gotten so far from IE. Those little

achievements and successes helped me to switch my focus from 'failure' to a more

forward looking success path. I know can't imagine how I ever ate any other way
