Guest guest
I want you to know that I just had a LONG discussion with Elaine on this issue while at Autism One in Chicago. I was confident Luke was doing well on his SCD dairy (which he IS) until I got there and starting hearing all the woes of casein, again. I asked her about it, explaining that he's thriving in every way, but that I was still worried it was somehow hurting him in a way I couldn't see. She just looked at me and said, " Honey, have you read the book? " Now, she knew good and well I'd read the book, we've LIVED the book for over 4 months now. But she was reminding me of the basic premise of SCD, and that neither gluten NOR casein are the true culprits here. It's the carbohydrate factor, and in milk, it's the lactose. Now - with that said - Luke has been using organic cow's milk yogurt from the very beginning of SCD, and also has legal cheese every single day, one of his favorite foods. He is doing so well since SCD, I wish I could post to you the progress reports of his teachers and therapists from our end of year IEP yesterday. Every single one pointed out what a drastic improvement they saw in him from " around January " or " sometime after Christmas " ... well, we started SCD officially the end of January. Have you seen this link, I posted a while back? It's amazing!!! http://pages.ivillage.com/michelles2and1/id5.html Before SCD all we got from him was his name (barely legible) and some scribbles, all through a bunch of SCREAMING. He hated to even try. Now he can do THIS and most of the time, enjoys it. The dairy has not hurt him one bit. I believe it's been a key to his healing, in fact. So, I hope I answered your question. All kids are different but if YOUR child is doing well on the legal dairy then I see no reason for you to be afraid of it. GL! in NC Mom of Luke, age 5, Asperger's/low-salicylate; , almost 4; and , 2 on Friday!!! All SCD since 1/26/04 Parents of children with autism Hello all I was wondering how the kids who added dairy back in to their diets are doing. We added dairy back in (only scd dairy)about 3 weeks ago. I have seen absolutely nothing negative so far. (the last 3 days have been rough but I'm pretty sure that is the glutathione. If it doesn't get better after removing glutathione we may try removing dairy again). Anyway, the reason I am asking is that our DAN doc said that even though we may not be seeing anything negative, she could be producing peptides. He thinks we should test her in a few months. He said that there are reports of families who added dairy back in who have done fine for 2 months or so and then had big time downslides. I am especially interested in hearing from parents who added dairy back at least 2 months ago. Thanks, Terri For information on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, please read the book _Breaking the Vicious Cycle_ by Elaine Gottschall and read the following websites: http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info and http://www.pecanbread.com
Guest guest
My autistic son was GFCFSF for 1 1/2 years though I never was convinced he had a problem with dairy. Eventually I decided to add back soy and diary with enzymes (but couldn't add back gluten because of celiac). I did this for about 6 months before switching to SCD with continued improvement. From day 1 of SCD I gave him the SCD legal dairy with enzymes but after about a month I quit the enzymes because they were thought to be illegal at the time. Over the next 4 months he had a very slow, almost unnoticable regression. When I realized it, I got him back on the enzymes and he was back on track in no time. I cannot say if the regression was because he was having dairy without enzymes or because of his not taking enzymes but I can say I experienced the same thing years prior when I had him on enzymes in addition to diet and stopped while continuing GFCFSF so I really do not think it was the dairy. One time he did get ahold of illegal dairy (commercial yogurt) and he was acting like a madman for the rest of the day. I still wonder to this day if he reacted to lactose or what. He has no problem with homemade yogurt. > Hello all > > I was wondering how the kids who added dairy back in to their diets > are doing. We added dairy back in (only scd dairy)about 3 weeks > ago. Guest guest
Hi Terri, I would like to know who these " reports " are from. We haven't had any reports of long term problems with dairy use that I know of. There were some kids who did not tolerate dairy, but the problems went away when the dairy was removed. I haven't heard of any children doing well on the dairy for a long time and then beginning to regress. If anyone has been in that position, we would always appreciate people filling out a Problem Report form on pecanbread.com. That would help us track the problems that people are having. I am not saying that these people don't exist. I am just saying none of them have filled out Problem Reports. And to answer your question, my kids have been back on dairy for almost 10 months with no losses or regressions. We use goat and sheep products. We had been casein free for 3 years when we started SCD 16 months ago and we remained casein free for a long time after starting. Guest guest
I would be really interested in finding out more about these reports. Did they add back all dairy (milk, commercial yogurt, ice cream etc) or SCD legal dairy (lactose free)? In my opinion, this makes all the difference in the world.
