Well, I have supportive doctors too. I go to a military hospital for all my

medical care, and for those of you who are or have been seen in those places,

you usually end up seeing a different doctor evertime you go in. Everytime

I've taken my son in to be seen for his checkup, the doc always asks if I'm

still BF, and when I say yes, she's like Good for you, Keep it up! So, I

haven't had a problem there. I guess I'm fortunate that my son has been seen

by female doctors? Anyway, that's been my experience.

Did you get the mail i sent to your breastfeeding address? We are going to

try the mycelex troaches in glycerin. This just seems to be a very resistant

thrush. You apply the compound to myself and the baby 5 times in 24 hours

and it should kill the yeasties by the end of the day.

Also...you suggested using Lavendar Ess. Oil for the eczema....do I just add

a few drops of it to my bath water?

Thanks.

Maybe that's the case...and yes, you are lucky! Holden's ped is a male and

very supportive...whereas my OBs are women and aren't as supportive. I think

it's a completely individual thing.

It's a lozenge. I would assume that it's an antifungal. The drugs general

name is clotrimazole, that sounds like an antifungal name (they are all

usually " zole " endings " and the brand name " mycelex " .....is the same name of

the vaginal yeast treatment.

Anyway, you take a 10 mg lozenge and grind it up, then mix it with 5ml of

glycerin.

My LC suggested it, she heard about it from an article written by Kay Hoover,

M.Ed, IBCLC in regards to treating Candidia Infections during Lactation. It

says that the clotrimazole " has produced elevated liver enzymes " but that

" some practitioners have used it short-term with good results " . I think that

if the liver enzymes were of a major concern then our Pediatrician wouldn't

have written the script. I'm just so darn desperate at this point. I would

love to be able to nurse pain free!!

Gosh, !! Maybe you should pass along his name and location for the

rest of us. :) That would make me nearly burst out in tears to get that

sort of validation from a doctor!! You have done so well!!!

>He also wrote a prescription for a new med for us to

>try with the thrush. We will kill those yeasties yet!!!

>He then asked how long we were planning to BF Holden, when I said " we're

>going to let him self wean " he said " that's great "

>

What new med? Are you talking about Diflucan??

If he is interested in learning more... the doctor Cristina mentioned who

spoke at a conference she attended, Dr. Jack Newman, uses an " All Purpose

Nipple Ointment " that he prescribes to moms with thrush-like symptoms.

....looking...

I should add that he encourages using Gentian Violet first, once a day for

four days, then the nipple ointment... then Diflucan.

mupirocin 2% ointment (10 grams)

nystatin 100,000 unit/ml ointment (10 grams)

clotrimazole 10% (vaginal cream) (10 grams)

betamethasone 0.1% ointment (10 grams)

The pharmacist mixes it all together and it is applied sparingly after each

feeding. Do not wash or wipe it off. You need a prescription for it.

This is used until pain free and then usage decreases over a week or so.

(See Treatments for Problems--all purpose nipple ointment).

Good news...FINALLY!

From: Mygrdntool@...

I just have to say that I love Holden's pediatrician. I've finally found a

doctor who is so supportive of BFing.

The nurses commented on how big he was and how healthy he looked. They asked

" are you still breastfeeding? " When I said " yes " she said " you really can

tell, these breast fed babies just grow and grow and grow "

He weighed in at 12pounds 2 ounces (he was 8.6 at birth) and was 22 3/4

inches long (21 at birth).

I spoke with his doctor about getting the thrush cleared up. Even though

Holden doesn't have the thrush (he's obvioulsy just a carrier), he was very

insightful and willing to listen. He said " god bless you for sticking to

this after all you've been though, I just can't say enough good things about

you breastfeeding moms " He also wrote a prescription for a new med for us to

try with the thrush. We will kill those yeasties yet!!!

He then asked how long we were planning to BF Holden, when I said " we're

going to let him self wean " he said " that's great "

So anyway, I am in such a good mood and I have such incentive to continue

nursing through this pain. I just keep looking at my chunko-monko baby and

seeing how happy and healthy he is...and then I realize that I've done it

all....wow!!! Way to go Mama Milk!

Kim,

Currently, our military clinic (no in-patient facility here) only has one

pedi, and SHE is married but childless. She encourages breastfeeding only

if the mother brings it up, really... and uses " formula " when talking about

feeding babies. According to one mom that goes to the LLL meetings here,

she commented that SHE would never breastfeed " that long, " when she told

this mom that the WHO recommends nursing 2 years, and the AAP says at least

12 months, longer if both mom and baby are interested. Like I said, one of

these days, I would love for a doc to say something like this to me!! lol

The only doctor/pedi at a military hospital that I have ever seen who

supported breastfeeding in the same way I do was an older woman from

somewhere in South America who barely spoke English. Needless to say, I

loved her. lol She was the only one who didn't bat an eye when I would

say that I had been applying breastmilk on a diaper rash (not thrush rash)

or a skin scrape, and suggest that I continue doing so as well. The other

pedi in the same office is the same one who told me I had failed at

breastfeeding, btw!

I did get it and I don't even know what Mycelex troaches are. Please give

me more info so I can help you. Is it an antiyeast medication? Lavander

oil can be put in the bath or put in a mild carrier oil such as grapeseed

oil or jojoba oil. It can also be applied directly to the skin.

Wow I am so happy for you. I took Davian to his 6 month appt. on

Thursday and was a little upset with his ped. You see, at every visit they

give you a little sheet saying what new developments to expect as far as

diet, development, sleep, etc. On the sheet it was talking about " possibly

weaning your baby from the breast soon and introducing a sippy cup. " When

she came in the room she asked me if he was weaned yet???? I told her no and

that I was planning on letting him self-wean and she said, " oh that's good "

but didn't sound real enthused. I also talked with her about being able to

give him some foods high in iron because he doesn't like cereal and she

suggested polyvisol drops with iron. I told her I was looking for some foods

such as avocadoes, etc to give to him and she said for me to find a list off

of the internet to fax to her because she's not exactly sure what foods are

high in iron ????

- who is going to start looking for a new pediatrician.

Nutrition courses, just like breastfeeding courses, are NOT a requirement

in many state's medical programs for doctors OR nurses. Sad fact. Even if

you faxed a list to her, would she know the difference!? You can increase

the level of iron in YOUR diet, and therefore your milk, to a better level

of *absorbable* iron than Davian would get from supplemental iron -- and

less constipation too!

Maybe you would have more luck getting a referral to a Registered Dietician

who could help you out.

A quick way to increase your family's iron levels is to use cast iron pans

and utensils when cooking. Apparently some of the iron leeches into the

foods... and for once, the leeching is a good thing. :)

can't believe that. It is her job to know that kind of stuff.

Sorry, I should have made myself more clear. There were two reasons for the

list - #1 she couldn't think of iron rich foods off the top of her head and

when I asked her about sweet potatoes she said she didn't think those had

much iron in them. #2. She was going to review the list to let me know what

items I could give him now to avoid allergic reactions such as nuts.

I've thought about this too, but what about MY constipation? Just the iron

in my prenatals gives me problems. (I know, to much information LOL)

You might also try and find some literature/articles about the

" bioavailability " of iron in breastmilk as opposed to iron-fortified foods,

like infant cereal or formula. I bet she would be incredibly surprised.

Sounds like a great educational opportunity!

Actually, the iron in FOOD is better absorbed than iron in a pill --

especially if you combine the iron-rich foods with other foods high in

VitC. Pills are designed to survive the acidic contents of the stomach.

Organ meats are especially high in iron, and also cholesterol, which for a

baby or toddler is a necessary nutrient for nerve tissue, brain development

and skin growth. Leafy greens are an excellent source of iron, but taste

about as nasty (to me) as liver. HOWEVER... lol if you keep chopped

spinach packages in your freezer, they do come in handy. :) Add them to

ground beef while it is in the last stage of browning. Tacos will have

some serious nutritional value. :D Add it to soups and stews... Tomatos

are a good source of VitC, so think of adding spinach to tomato-based sauces.

Recapping Tammy's list:

Excellent Sources:

Liver (beef, pork, chicken)

Iron Fortified Cereals

---

Good Sources:

Red meat

eggs

dried beans and peas

watermelon

prunes

asparagus

spinach

As for your own digestive health, having too much iron in your system that

isn't absorbed is the culprit of sticky/stuck bowels. Using supplements to

add to your system (ala prenatal vits -- blech) means that lots of iron has

to be included since most of it will go " down the drain. " Find sources of

iron that are intended to be absorbed better (like foods!) and the problem

should resolve.

Here's one thing I did, as a result of doing home day care around the

clock: I posted lists of food that we commonly ate, what they were high in,

and how much of it I needed per day/week. (I tend to think that the RDA

should be listed by week, and not day!) Write out a high-nutrient menu for

a few days, using 5-6 mealtimes to meet all those needs. In our day care,

we were required to break it down like this:

(hope I can remember!)

Breakfast - 1 bread, 1 veg/fruit 1 milk

Mid AM Snack - 1 protein, 1 veg/fruit

Lunch - 1 bread, 1 protein, 2 veg/fruit, 1 milk

Mid PM Snack - 1 protein OR 1 veg/fruit, 1 bread, 1 milk

Dinner - 1 bread, 1 protein 2 veg/fruit, 1 milk

Midnight Snack - 1 protein OR 1 veg/fruit, 1 bread, 1 milk

And where it says veg/fruit, you have to go heavier on the veggies than the

fruit. :) You can't pick 2 fruits and call it done. :) Using this as a

guide though, helps you plan meals out better. You can see that there

isn't a place at breakfast for bacon AND eggs, toast, juice and milk, so

the SpecialK diet is shot. lol Watch this sample, high-iron menu:

Breakfast: whole wheat toast spread with orange preserves and milk (or a

dairy/calcium substitute)

Mid AM Snack: Cubes of deli roast beef and apple slices

Lunch: Cream of asparagus soup, three-bean salad with tomato wedges,

watermelon and milk

Mid PM Snack: Cheese cubes, whole wheat graham crackers, milk

Dinner: Potato Rolls, Beef Stew with Carrots and Peas (add chopped spinach

or a can of black beans to broth) and milk

Midnight Snack: Half a peanut butter sandwich and milk

And if you have a toddler who is eating solids, this would work for him.

If you have a young baby starting solids, this would work with

fork-mashed... Measure his servings with a tablespoon... Start with a

" solid " nursing session to curb his appetite and provide better nutrition

for him than what might make it into his mouth. :)

You might end you with better nutrition for the whole family, too.
