I spend to get good shoes too, it makes a big difference to my walking, tripping, stumbling and falling. My balance is terrible, but I never realised that talking and walking connection before, but it makes sense. Last Saturday I was walking back from the beach (we live close) and yakking with a couple of friends..........next thing I was on my arse in the gutter....ha ha.

If the sun gets in my eyes....over I go....my hair blows across my eyes.......whoops,down again.

I`m getting to be a really good at falling....now if only I can get someone to pay me for it.........

hehe, very funny nate. whats neuropathy guys????? , I wudnt use the brace unless you cant walk w/o it, you become dependent on it. if you dont mind then no prob, but it aint pretty. I wear GOOD shoes that help me, I cant wear cheap flimsy walmart shoes, Im stuck wearing very expensive $100 shoes but it helps, and shoes are a girls bestfriend ;-) And we tend to lose our balance whenever our eyes (vision) has are diverted. Our balance nerve is messed up so eyes compensate, when people talk to us as we walk, it makes us trip. i have a rule, no talking to me while walking. i make people stop if they want to talk. so its not your feet really, its your balance nerve in your head that worsen the tripping.

yeah, the " in " style shoes are not good. I wear sports sandals a lot, Id wear

them anyway, love them. Teva makes awesome walking sandals, velcro strap, they

look very athletic style. I just bought a $99 pair. I dont know how old you are

(I'm 33) but I could wear pumps til about 3 years ago, I cant now. I wear my

tennies a lot, new balance walking shoes with velcro, big sole, lots a support.

Basically I need a full shoe, cant wear strappy things dang it, but timberland

makes nice sandals that i can wear. I have a pair of easy spirit brown suede

slip ons, good for walking, easy spirit is great, a lot of granny shoes but u

can find some cute ones that wont make u look 85 ;-)

Don't know very much about it beyond that they say it's the cause of my drop

foot. I do know that Neuropathy (besides being the diagnosis when they don't

seem to find any other reason) is basically poor Nerve conduction. And

that's about all I know

Neuropathy (narrow pathy! haha) is a weakening or

deadening of the nerves- usually in the extremeties

(hands and feet). In addition to drop foot, my wrists

and fingers are also weakened.

All my doctors will say is that mine is caused by NF2,

but not by a specific tumor. They say there is no

tumor large enough or close enough to cause this;

plus, it is bilateral for me. However, they stress

that this is RARE. So, in addition to having NF2 (a 1

in 40,000 occurrence), I also won the gene crap-shoot

and got NF2-related neuropathy with it. I am quite

the Mutant.

Carla Long has the same symptoms as I do, I believe.

I have more appointments this summer (June 25), which

will, no doubt, be fruitless.

And Pete, I've had those stinkin' tests, too! Little

twerp with the shock treatment straight out of the

Nazi Handbook. My wife enjoyed watching me jump and

squirm.

yeah, I wear athletic shoes almost exclusively.

Nikes- Those 8-year old Honduran kids do a fabulous

job! :-)

Funny story- the other day, I was teaching my classes

some new material, stressing to them that they had to

show their work step-by-step. " Don't skip steps! And

don't try to take two steps at once. Math is just

like walking. You try to take two steps at once,

you'll fall flat on your face. "

Of course, five minutes later, I'm walking around the

room and my stupid drop-foot catches the carpet and I

stumble. The kids really let me have it. " That's

what happens when you try to take two steps at once! "

Little snots got a pop-quiz for that! just kidding-

the kids have all been surprisingly cool about it-

except for last week, there was this kid in athletics

who just transfered back from Alternative Education-

where he was sent for bringing a knife to school...

after practice, I was walking to my truck, and this

kid gets RIGHTBEHIND me and starts making fun of my

walk. I turned around and he acted normal, and said,

" What's up, Coach? " I said, " Come here. You see that

giant orange flaming ball in the sky? "

" Yessir. The sun. " (duh)

" Well, the whole time you're behind me, that thing is

casting your shadow out to the side, and while I may

be deaf, I ain't blind, and I can see everything

you're doing. If you're gonna make fun of me, have

the guts to do it to my face. "

The look on his face was priceless. And the other

athletes- the ones who know me and have shown me

respect all year- cracked up laughing at him.

Okay, I've digressed a couple of times here...

What were we talking about? :-)

DANG if all this talk about drop foot didn't jinx me!

I'm taking the attendance slip out last period, STUPID

FOOT catches the carpet, and down I go. Crashed and

burned, stumbled into 3 chairs and a wall, dang near

killed myself.

SO then I have to explain to my WORST CLASS about

drop-foot and NF2....

I need a beer all of a sudden.

My husbands truck broke down along the interstate. Luckily we made it to a

rest stop. We always travel with my dog (Rocky - a Yorkshire Terrier). I

opened the door of the truck holding my dog, My feet got tangled up and I

ended up landing on my dog. I knocked the wind out of me and my dog! I

felt so bad. My dog did not yelp, you could just hear him go ooooof...

Re: Weakness

DANG if all this talk about drop foot didn't jinx me!

I'm taking the attendance slip out last period, STUPID

FOOT catches the carpet, and down I go. Crashed and

burned, stumbled into 3 chairs and a wall, dang near

killed myself.

SO then I have to explain to my WORST CLASS about

drop-foot and NF2....

I need a beer all of a sudden.

Ha ha ha.................... I wish I`d seen you Nate,

that would have looked soooo funny...............three chairs and a wall, that must be some sort of record.

Maybe the crew should and give out an award..............it could be called the "fall of the month award"

Once you get over the embarrassment you have to laugh.

I don't know, you're batting .500 so far. The Molson

was excellent, but I did not care for the Sam ...

If I see the Algonquin, I'll give it a try!

Nate- who's foot is THROBBING IN PAIN. Think I

fractured something besides my ego!

Were OK now. Nobody got hurt, just embarrassed thats all. Actually when I

fall I don't get embarrassed anymore. I just get up and usually start

laughing. I have even noticed that when my husband walks with me he

stumbles too! He does not have NF but when we walk together we walk alike.

My mom says when I walk in a room I look like I am drunk because I ALWAYS

stumble in doorways. Its that little bit of carpet or piece of metal that

gets in my way. And, I HATE RUGS. Rugs are horrible. My mom picks all the

rugs up in the house when I come visit.

When I had my tumour removed from my head it was necessary to cut a nerve.

That nerve controlled my right foot.

I have no control over my right foot. That is my drop foot.

your tumour is pressing on that nerve and there is little to do

Randy,

Are you able to walk without help?
