Guest guest
, If you just recently tried the rice and soy products, I would consider going back to the intro diet for a few days to clear out his gut. I will say that 1-2 pounds of meat per day compared to 1 1/2 cups vegetables doesn't seem like a very good ratio to me. That's a lot of protein compared to his vegetable intake. I would try to mix in more vegetables with the ground meat each time to try to even out his food intake. I am a very big person for a woman at 6'1 " and I eat less than 1/2 pound of meat per day. Try using Fitday.com to determine how many calories he is getting per day and how many grams of protein/carbs/fat he is getting. SCD restricts on the types of carbs, not the amount of carbs and is not intended to be a low carb diet. The fruits you mentioned, is he tolerating them well? Or do you see evidence of undigested fruits? Jody mom to -5 and -7 SCD 16 months
Guest guest
> SOme one said to give yogurt but that scares me because of > casien. Anyone one the yogurt issue and autism? My son is 5 years old, started GFCF at 3 1/2 and SCD 6 months later. I was very concerned about the dairy issue, but became convinced to try the yogurt after reading Jen Youngs story about how the yogurt was what actually boosted her son's recovery. I tried it after only a few weeks of starting SCD. did very well with it and ate a lot of it - probably too much. Then, that summer, I started to panic about the whole issue again. I feel pretty silly about that, actually. The science is clear - SCD goat yogurt is VERY different than fluid cow's milk. I started on the yogurt again after several months off of it. He did remarkably well and continues to do well on it. It finally firmed up his stools to perfect trophies every time and his interactions are more and more engaging every day. He not only answers questions now, he asks them. After being on the diet for just a few months, 's social issues faded to almost none. He is friendly, affectionate, and outgoing, but still had major expressive communication delays. With the addition of the yogurt, he is blossoming - again. This little guy never ceases to amaze me, but the yogurt is THE trick. It's the bacteria. It is the best probiotic around and with the addition of the enzymes and nutrition of the food itself - I'm so happy to be giving it to him. Now, here is the deal --- he still, after many weeks on yogurt and over a year on the diet - he still only eats a couple of tablespoons a day. I could probably increase it, but I'm just not ready yet. It's not about the casein - it's about the billions of bacteria. That's why we encouage people to go so slowly - because of the probiotic power of the stuff. It will get in there and crowd out the baddies and if that happens too fast, well... what looks like regression may actually be massive die-off and not very pretty to see. So, slow slow slow, but please please please do try it!! son - 5yo ASD, SCD 15 months
Guest guest
Jody, thanks for reply. I dont notice any undigested food in his stool. The only think I notice is seeds from the barries he eats. A few years ago I would see all kinds of things like spinach etc come through. His stool seem pretty regular and normal thank god. One in a blue moon the get firm so I give liquid mineral and that solves it. you said: " SCD restricts on the types of carbs, not the amount of carbs and is not intended to be a low carb diet. " I was told by tristans Dan doctor back when he gave me the SCD diet book, that children get enough carbs through vetables and fruits which he eats plenty of fruit and I am currently trying to add more vegtables as we go. I got to do it slow or else he freaks out over the change. Whats your take on that? Or anyone else please chime in here. thanks kimberly tristans mom > , > > If you just recently tried the rice and soy products, I would > consider going back to the intro diet for a few days to clear out > his gut. > > I will say that 1-2 pounds of meat per day compared to 1 1/2 > cups vegetables doesn't seem like a very good ratio to me. > That's a lot of protein compared to his vegetable intake. > > I would try to mix in more vegetables with the ground meat each > time to try to even out his food intake. > > I am a very big person for a woman at 6'1 " and I eat less than 1/2 > pound of meat per day. > > Try using Fitday.com to determine how many calories he is > getting per day and how many grams of protein/carbs/fat he is > getting. Guest guest
, I stopped giving tristan enzymes but he takes product that has enzymes and probiotics in it. Green algae call biologic. I always see regression when I stop green algea. But this last time he had a yeast overload, I had stopped the extra probiotics I was giving him, then giving him rice. So maybe I need to start them back up and I will try the yogurt slowly. I have also used energetic medicine to get the yeast down. I was looking in the SCD book that I dug back out and there is a yogurt reciped in there. Should I be using that one?IS there a yogurt you can get at health food stores? IS there anyone who is able to let the kids have some or little rice now and then? He loves it so much. I guess I just have to play around and see? > > > > SOme one said to give yogurt but that scares me because of > > casien. Guest guest
Kim, The green algae supplement would be illegal on SCD. No, there is no store bought yogurt that can be used on SCD.... we have to make our own according to the book. No, you can't use any amount of rice and still be SCD legal. He may " love it " ...... but that does not mean it's good for him. Sometimes it's the very things that our kids love most that we must realise are almost like addictions. You mentioned in another post that he drinks a lot of soy milk....... all soy is illegal on SCD. Homemade nut milks would be the closest alternative. I would have to say that, so far, it sounds like you haven't really had him on SCD completely. Did the doctor you go to recommend using rice, soy and green algae on SCD? If so, he/she is not fully informed about SCD and how it works. I guess I just have to play around > and see? Dear Kim Page 28, paragraph 3 in BTVC explains why rice is not allowed on SCD. It contains a starch that is harmful. Small amounts of illegal foods can result in needless setbacks. O believe algae is similar to seaweed and may also be restricted but am not sure. best thing is to give the diet a shot as it is written as healing will present new opportunities for additional foods to compensate for that which is given up. Hang in and give SCD a fair trial. best of luck. Carol F. Celiac, SCD 3 yrs.
Guest guest
, It might be best if you just enter a few day's typical food intake on fitday.com just to be sure that he is getting enough carbs. It was just your statement that he is eating 1-2 pounds of meat that caught my attention. You are right that fruits and veggies do have carbs, but it would take a lot of carbs to balance out 2 pounds of meat. Joining fitday.com is free. If you have any problems using it, just let me know. Guest guest
Ok im either dumb or just plum exhausted. Some one tell me what BTV or what ever you said it please. Ill read it if I can find it. So you guys really think I sould give up algea because its illegal? I dont know if I can do that. Ive tried two times and notice stems come back every time. Whats you thoughts. I see there are already three big changes to make and thats NO SOY!! and NO RICE. I can just do what I can do. Is there ever a time the gut heals all the way and we can give rice on occasion. I think I read everyone is different and you jsut have to test it out. WHat about aloe juice for healing. Ive used that on and off to help heal his gut for a year. > > > > IS there anyone who is able to let the kids have some or little rice > > now and then? He loves it so much. Guest guest
Kim, no need to sweat bullets!! REALLY!!! You are not going to heal Tristan overnight and so a slow start is only that - slow, not none. Some people gradually move into SCD, others begin it without looking back. Find what works for you. BTVC stands for " Breaking the Vicious Cycle, " a book written by Elaine Gottschall to explain the mysterious connection between what we eat and how our digestive system reacts. Revolutionary, I know! Read her story on her web page and you'll see how much stubborness she waded through. You can find the link easily if you go to the " Home " option to the upper left of your computer screen, at the bottom click onto breakingtheviciouscycle.com. From there you can order the book, check out her personal story, find information, etc. Many parents of autistic spectrum kids have found out about the SCD because so many kids with autism have really frustrating bowel problems. When the parents began this diet for their ASD children, many found behavioral, social, cognitive and language aquisition gained as a very pleasant bonus. The book really explains the correlation between digestive difficulties and various health problems including autism. This will answer many of your questions about how and why soy, rice, algea, etc, is not allowed. I know it can be daunting to begin - I found the hardest part was making the mental commitment. Once I decided once and for all what foods were and were not going to nourish my child, the hard part was done. Now the grunt work begins, but like anything else in life, first you find out about something new, then you learn more about it, then you experiment and get experience, finally you get good. You can do this. Really, you can! We're all here for one another. Don't be too hard on yourself - no good can come of it! Helen, mom to three great kids including (9 y/o, ASD), healing well on strict SCD since 4/04 > Ok im either dumb or just plum exhausted. Some one tell me what BTV > or what ever you said it please.
