ESE Parent Workshop information is available on the ESE website http://www.broward.k12.fl.us/studentsupport/ese/html/WORKSHOP.htm May 27, 2009 (9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) Location: Baudhuin Preschool Davie, FL Cost: $10.00 Registration Fee for refreshments/financial assistance available (check or money order made out to: School Board of Broward County) Social Skills Training and Managing Challenging Behavior Many students with special needs present with difficulty regulating their feelings and interacting socially. This workshop describes how to handle meltdowns and design effective behavior plans to prevent these moments and reduce frustration and anxiety. The second part of the presentation details strategies to motivate students to learn, ways to teach social skills, how to generalize skills into the natural setting and increase acceptance and tolerance from peers. Information will be imparted though lecture, interactive exercises, and video clips. Presenter: Dr. Jed Baker, Behavioral Consultant, Maplewood, NJ Note: There is a limited supply of social skills books that will be provided to parents who register and pay the $10.00 registration fee in advance (financial assistance is available). Please specify the grade level of your child. For younger children, there is a social skills manual titled, "Social Skills Training for Children and Adolescents with Asperger Syndrome and Social-Communication Problems". For high school students, there is a social skills manual titled, "Preparing for Life: The Complete Guide to Transitioning to Adulthood for those with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome". Please specify if your child has limited language skills and may benefit from a social skills picture book titled, “The Social Skills Picture Book: Teaching play, emotion, and communication to children with autism,†(available for children) or " Social Skills Picture Book for High School and Beyond" (available for high school students).
