It could easily be eczema on your nipples that is what happened to my friend and after several months she finally weaned her 13 month old daughter. She just couldn't take it anymore. Go see someone else. A naturopath pehaps? Don't stop trying to get help someone can help you who is pro bf. I wish you luck and healing. Wendi Frustration... From: Mygrdntool@... I thought you'd all get a kick out of how supportive my primary care doctor is of nursing... I was there today for some exzema <sp> that I have on my legs and feet. While I was there, I decided to ask his opinion on my nipple problem. I said " after 7 weeks, treating for thrush (of which I have no symptoms), and 2 LC visits, I still have horrendously cracked nipples, could this be related to my exzema? " He said " no, probably not. of course you have cracked nipples, you traumatize that sensitive area how many times a day? You're going to have them until you stop breastfeeding. " And went on to tell me that we couldn't treat the exzema on my legs until I stop BFing also. He also said that as long as the cracks aren't bothering me or the baby, that I'll just have to deal with it until I stop. Hello. Not bothering? Let me slice your nipple in half and see how that " doesn't bother " you. How supportive, eh? Is it ANY wonder why so many women formula feed or give up on BFing? I'm not at all surprised. The Monster Doctor gave me a 'script for a steroid (to treat my legs, we're still treating nipples as yeast and I FINALLY got diflucan from my OB). Anyway, I don't want to use a steroid if I can get away with something natural, as I don't want HOlden getting the steroid. I just need to treat the itchiness. I was using a prescription topical gel (Temovate)that contained a steroid, but only when it got bad. I started using Dr. Bronner's castille soap instead of shampoo, and it disappeared. I don't use the medicine anymore and it is totally gone. I think that I was allergic to the fragrance or detergents in shampoo. I use that now in the shower totally, no soap, no shampoo and no conditioner. I haven't had symptoms since I started using this. It's available at health food stores and quite a few places online. Moisturize frequently. What kind of laundry detergent do you use? I have found All Clear Free to be the least irritating of all the detergents and have tried more than you care to know. Actually, I heard nearly the same thing last night and this morning. , my little guy with the heart defect/VSD, has had a fever, and only a fever, for a few days. (Sorry Hannah that I didnt show up the other night for the 4pm ET chat -- he was the reason!) I finally called the Ped to let her know what was going on, and that I wanted to get an opinion that the fever wasnt causing any stress on him that would add to his heart problems. He had increased respirations (62 per min) which is high (normal for his age is 30-40 per min) but with a fever, its pretty normal. So we went in, no unusual respiratory sounds, no unusual heart sounds... but the doc ordered a nebulizer breathing treatment which Jeff protested but endured. At least he slept better after this treatment than he had in the past two nights. The next morning, the Ped called me back and wanted to make sure it wasnt pneumonia, so we went back for x-rays... not pneumonia. She also noticed in his chart that we hadnt done blood work (a blood draw into a tube, not a finger stick) for lead and anemia. She wanted us to go ahead and do it now, and get a CBC and blood culture while they were taking blood. I told them one stick only, 15 secs to draw blood, or they were done. 15 secs into it, no blood, so I called it done. The doc asked me if I wanted her to do it (!!) and when I asked her how vital this stick was to his health... she paused and admitted that he didnt have to have it done. We left. still only has a fever, and it doesnt respond to Tylenol, so Im thinking its just something viral that will eventually run its course. It has been three days now, so it should be breaking soon. As I type this, he is acting like a normal 17 month old, playing outside on a bike. A long story just to tell you that while doing his " history " the doc asks what he has had to eat or drink, and of course, I tell her that he has been nursing more than normal for him, but is still eating, just less of it, and still drinking fluids, just less of it. She says, " Are you planning on weaning him any time soon? " so I tell her that I wasnt going to rush it, and do something silly like put tabasco sauce on my nipples, or plan a trip out of town for a week (something she has suggested before!) in order to make it happen suddenly. I told her I was going to let him finish nursing naturally, and she nodded. BUT, each time she or anyone else commented how s symptoms were not like the other kids they had seen, the ones who needed respiratory therapy, or hospitalization, or antibiotic therapy, I quickly pointed out how lucky he was to have the protection of breastmilk... or how lucky he is that he is a breastfed baby. Several times I added something about new research that showed breastmilk killing bacteria or cancer... Especially how this was his *first* illness. They all got the hint. I enjoyed myself immensely. I have seen children repeatedly stuck for a routine blood sample and no one stepping in to say that is enough. I am proud of you. You keep informing those docs and maybe one day they'll figure out that the reason they don't see the kids in their extended nursing is because they aren't getting sick. Could he be cutting teeth? The problem is, as I well know, once the cycle has started it is very difficult to break. All the products that I mentioned are available online and at health food stores. It's is the link for Dr. Bronners at wholefoods.com. If you have one in your area, it would be cheaper to buy it there because they charge a lot for shipping. I found it at other places on the net, but the prices were high. I paid 5.99 for a 32 oz bottle at a local HFS. It REALLY goes a long way, because you're supposed to dilute it. I use the supermild baby soap, because the others have fragrance, although they are natural fragrances. Only 3 1/2 more weeks. is still nursing but not as much. I am trying sooo hard to cut that formula out. She gets only about 10 ozs a day of formula and nurses all night long and man do I mean ALL NIGHT LONG. I have tried to give her some solids but she just doesn't want anything to do with them.
