Jenn, I personally think cereal is highly overrated!! I would start with

bananas or avacados. Those are excellent first foods!!!!

If you go the cereal route mixing with your own BM is ideal!!

I have not had good experience with rice cereal. Davian has hated it and

still does, even mixed with BM. He LOVES bananas, and as has

mentioned before they taste most like BM.

Best of luck!

Jenn,

La Leche League has a program that talks about what foods to introduce when,

and I think has listed it all here before, and I know she knows more

than I do, but what LLL recommends is starting with mashed bananas or sweet

potatoes first because they most closely resemble breastmilk. I think they

are also considered to be less likely to cause allergies than grains also.

Good luck, and let us know what works since Emma and I aren't there yet!

Thanks, that's cool. I remember saying something about bananas, and

I tried them once with Paige and she practically turned her nose up at

them... But she is always taking pieces of breadproducts from me and

knawing on them. I am planning on attending my first LLL meeting in two

weeks, so I will also be able to ask them too :) jenn:)

Jenn,

You might want to try wheat-free teething biscuits from Healthy Times. I

gave them to Maddie when she was at the stage Paige is at. Giving wheat too

early can cause sensitivities, so maybe you should hold off. My dh loved to

give her soft pretzels (we live near Philly) and it made me crazy!!

Here's a link to the Baby Lane- sells them there, and will adjust her

shipping costs for small orders. (She also has Mother's milk tea and awesome

toys for anyone who's interested)

http://www.thebabylane.com/grocery.htm

The maple-flavored ones are wheat-free. They are so hard that a baby

couldn't get a piece off and choke on it, but it will make some mush for

them to suck off. Whole Foods and Fresh Fields also carries them.

Anyway, I hope this helps-Chewing might be her thing- and the food is just a

bonus.

I did want to add, that this is more a sign of readiness for finger foods..

the pincer grasp develops between 7-10 months and that is when toddler

teether biscuits and finger foods would be a good idea..

The other criteria do work well for knowing when a baby is ready..

Tammy,

Well maybe except for Zaid who bit off a piece and choked. Just don't let

them get really soggy and that won't happen. I do recommend anyone whose

family has a history of food allergies to be vary wary of giving wheat to

an infant under one. They are finding that babies are being sensitized and

developing horrible wheat allergies later in life. Allergies tend to be

inherited so the more family members with allergies the more careful you

should be. Zaid and Kaija were completely wheat free until their first

birthday on the advice of both different pediatricians at the time.

Since you should be eating a well-balanced meal, with a variety of

different foods in as close to their natural state as possible :D why not

let Paige eat something right off your plate? Its not like she is going to

get tons and tons of any one thing... and she has already tasted what you

eat, since the oils from foods flavor the milk. :) You might want to

reserve a few tablespoons when you are making your dinner and keep those

portions out before you add seasonings.

Part of it is less of an interest in EATING, but more in experiencing,

since you enjoy it so much, you do it several times a day. :) Allow her

some time to explore the newness of foods... be prepared to do some sponge

bathing. Let her develop a healthy relationship with food, and not

something that must be done or else be forced, or something that she isnt

fortunate enough to enjoy today...

I always invited my dog into the dining area when we had a new solid eater

at our table. :) We just let her eat all the food that landed on the

floor, and did some serious sponge bathing at the beginning. For me the

end result was that my baby was happily feeding himself/herself foods that

appealed to her, and that was usually anything in front of him/her, and all

of us at the table at the same time.

Jenn,

To an exclusively breastfed baby, introducing solids that are difficult to

digest, like formula or cereals, can cause irritation to the bowels and

make all future eating experiences unhappy ones.

Those first feedings can also go more smoothly if you start by nursing a

little first to take the edge off the hunger.

The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, a book you can buy at your LLL meeting,

has a section on starting solids on page 236. It suggests starting with a

raw mashed banana since it has more food value than cereals. It suggests,

if your baby doesnt like bananas, to try baked sweet potatoes and avocados

next. Both are high in vitamins and iron, and better nutritional choices

than cereal. Not to mention cheaper in the long run!

It also suggests introducing meats early, in order to meet the iron and

protein needs of the baby. One meeting we had here, a registered dietician

came by to visit and see what was discussed... she was impressed at the

thoughtfulness of substituting high-value breastmilk with foods of equal

value. Strained green beans and cereal arent high in food value.

In the section under wheat and grains, it talks about commercial baby

cereals being low in food value since they are highly processed. Using

whole-wheat bread with a spread, like natural peanut butter (be careful if

you have a family history of peanut allergies), cheese and other spreads.

For fun once, I used the cream that was on the top of expressed breastmilk

to make my own butter. It was really easy, and my babies loved it. You

just skim the cream, put it in a clean jar with a lid, (the smallest baby

food jars are perfect) shake it for about 10 mins, pour off the liquid,

shake some more... pour off any liquid remaining, and press the curds into

a mold/form and refrigerate. Yummy, healthy, preservative-free,

bovine-protein-free, salt-free Baby Butter! :)

You know just because the Dr says she can have cereal doens't mean you HAVE

to give it to her. My Dr was VERY adament about starting cereal at 4 months I

said OKIE DOKIE. The day of 's 6 month check up I gave him a his first

bit of baby cereal and at the appoiment he asked has he been eating cereal I

said YEP (without lieing) hehehe Of course that cereal was it after that He

raily got any food at all until he was 12 months old. He is a wonderful boy

Just the right size despite the fact that I havn't pilled food on him since

he was WAY to young for it like alot of people I know. I think it's sad when

mothers give there aby food (cereal or whatever) when they are 2 and 3 months

old cause they think they are hugry for it and can't get enough. They need to

work on paying more attention to there little ones and not so much time

worrying about everythig else.

Jenn,

Some people swear by rice cereal...not me though. I don't think it is

particularly bad, it just isn't that appetizing! I guess the ebm would make

it better though. You have to do what you are comfortable with. If I do it

again, I will skip all baby food (except for occasionally when it is

convenient on an outting, etc.) and go straight to modified table food(s).

Mash it up, smash it up, and let her enjoy! Afterall, what's better than

fresh, mommy or daddy prepared veggies?!

I do offer her little tastes here and there of what I am eating. SHe

usually gives me big smiles of delight when I share, that is what pushes me

Thanks Jenn. Honestly though, I havent said anything that you guys didnt

already know or believe. Some of it was just putting words to what your

had already felt or thought. Sometimes, hearing someone else has the same

thoughts is helpful, and if that is what it takes, then I will be happy to

add to them! :)

It may be helpful to get it back out and make sense out of the section on

starting solids then, especially if you are worried that your doctor will

ask you to do something you arent comfortable doing. Sometimes just having

enough information that helps you explain your choices is enough to

convince an authority-figure that you are capable of doing things on your

own, without intervention.

What is offered in this section though, is quite different than what some

doctors recommend. Their recommendations are based on the needs of a

formula-fed child and those children WILL need higher iron-rich foods at

that time. Learning which foods can increase the iron in your milk, as

well as in your babys diet, and being prepared to share what you have

applied in your kitchen with your doctor might be all you need to feel

confident in your ability to provide for Paige, and for your doctors legal

records. :)

Quick tip: when you brown ground beef, make soup or stew, add half a

package of frozen chopped spinach to boost the iron and vitamin levels of

your meals!

Seriously , It's not anything special that I have written to the

list, other than giving you enough information to do whatever it is your

instincts are already telling you to do. But thank you for the compliment!

:)

By the way, I got inspired to start learning more from LLL... I hope all

of you go to meetings, or at least get a membership and the free

subscription to New Beginnings. I used to devour them nearly trying to

read everything in them. I also spent a little time hunting down the

actual studies in the references... You would be amazed at what doctors

should know about breastfeeding, but don't!
