Hi my name is Carlson I am going to be turning 16 in 5 days! I am so

excited LoL June 5th! It is kind of funny well not funny but something how I

got here...

I could get to sleep last night because the baby was kicking or had the

hiccups so I went into the teen pregnancy chat room that is where I met

Phawxsee later I found out was Alli...I don't know how we got on the subject

of breastfeeding but we did she asked if I was planning to breastfeed I told

her I wasn't sure...so all the sudden she starts getting into all the

important things that breastfeeding can do I.E. you can bond the antibodies

are great and your baby doesn't get sick nearly as often and so forth so I

started thinking about it and in the end after her badgering me and

practically screaming that beastfeeding is the only choice lol I decided

okay...so after that she got me set up here tadum LoL

I am now 36 weeks pregnant and ready to expload! I want to be done with it LoL

just a few more weeks! 23 days in counting, you want MORE about me LoL

The father and I are " somewhat " seeing eachother but never once brings up the

baby or will even touch my tummy nice huh?

My parents are excited NOW for the birth of thier first grand baby! We don't

know the sex yet (by choice) So I am trying to stay with nutrals from

clothing.

I am just rembaling now so that is about it for now

Anyway, I am glad Alli convinced you to give breastfeeding and our list a

try. It is truly one of the most worthwhile things I have ever done. And

it isn't just for the baby. There are wonderful benefits for you, too. The

neatest thing in my opinion is that it is a great way to show love to your

baby. Even when you are tired or not feeling well, you are still able to

give your baby the very best you have to offer by breastfeeding. It is love

without any words! And let's face it, the baby can't understand words yet,

but he or she will understand milk!

A great thing about breastfeeding is if you are sick you don't even have to

leave your bed. If you are bottle feeding it is up and down all day

preparing bottles. How tiring!

Congratulations on your decision to breastfeed your baby! How exciting for

you!!!! It is soooo worth it!!! You should be very proud of yourself for

making such an educated decision! Good for you!!

You will love this list! We have MANY women who are very knowledgeable about

breastfeeding! Just try to read and absorb all you can! I know that when I

was pregnant all I had was a breastfeeding newsgroup and I didn't much enjoy

reading it. 1) it wasn't very personal 2) It was hard for me to try to

prepare for bf'ing in advance. I did however make myself read and was glad I

did! Just remember that we're here for you once you have the baby and have

any questions!! It does make a difference!

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy! I know it seems like it will go on

forever but just try to hang in there. Relax and try to enjoy yourself! : )

Congratulations!! I believe adopting a baby is wonderful way of loving the

I just attended a Le Leche League conference & had the prevledge of hearing

Dr Jack Norman speak. He is a leading peditrican from Toronto Canada & has an

international BF clinic there. He was very proud to inform us he has adoptive

mothers fulling BF. One of them has never been pregnant & this is her 2nd

adoptee to nurse!

He works with herbs, pumping & supplementation & hormones to start with. It

can be done!!! I would suggest looking for an IBCLC, (International Board

Certified Lactation Consultant) in your area to get you started!!

Just as soon as I got near the end of my first reply to you, my sweet

little one decided it was time for a reboot. So here we go again!

You might want to ask yourself a few questions about relactating or

inducing lactation. The answers will help you determine how you want the

course of breastfeeding your baby to go, whether it is to provide a full

supply of breast milk, or to provide emotional benefits by nurturing

through breastfeeding.

* How old is the baby you are adopting? Has this baby ever breastfed? How

long has it been since breastfeeding was discontinued? (A younger baby, or

a baby more willing to breastfeed and familiar with breastfeeding will be

more likely to go smoothly.)

* How will you tend to other children, or other obligations while you are

relactating/inducing lactation? Will you be able to find alternative care

for your children for this time, or reschedule your commitments? Is your

family under any unusual stress? (You will need to focus at least two

weeks on just this, perhaps more.)

* What sort of support will you have during this time? Who will help

encourage you and keep your motivation high, and your self-confidence

strong? What are the fathers/partners feelings towards your breastfeeding

this baby? (Your network of support may make all the difference. Even if

your support isnt understanding of the reasons for breastfeeding, at the

least, they can support your choice to make it happen with a sincere You

Can Do It!)

* What do you expect breastfeeding to provide for you? For the baby? Do

you hope to provide all of his nutritional needs with your milk? Do you

hope to provide all of the emotional needs through breastfeeding this baby?

(In many countries, women are able to provide 100% of the breast milk for

an adopted child. If the baby is willing to take the breast, it can be done.)

There are also some expected changes to your body that may occur with

lactation:

* Changes in menstrual patterns due to the hormonals effects;

* Breast/nipple changes (darkening of the areola, tenderness);

* Appearance of colostrum when milk production begins;

* Mood swings due to hormonal changes of induced lactation -- usually

around the time you would notice an increase in production.

If you are waiting for the baby to join your family, you may want to start

2-4 weeks before the arrival date. For some women, they can start

expressing as soon as they know when their baby might be arriving. For

other women, without a baby to nurse, the milk gradually decreases even

with continued expressing if they begin too soon before the babys arrival.

When the baby arrives, plan to gradually discontinue expressing and begin

nursing the baby at the breast, decreasing expressing more frequently as

nursing goes well. A nursing baby is more effective than any method of

expression.

A mother who is unsure about when her baby will be arriving may want to

start with just a few pumping sessions a day and gradually add more

sessions until whe is expressing every 2-2.5 hours during the day. When

pumping, start at the lowest suction setting and pump between 5-15 minutes

at each breast, depending on your comfort level, and work up to about 15

minutes at each breast. You might want to express during the night when

you know the baby will be arriving in a few days, or to mimic the babys

nursing patterns.

On average, a baby nurses 20-30 minutes, every 2-3 hours throughout the

day. At night, a baby may go 4-5 hours between nursings. Ideally, you

would put the baby to the breast this frequently, assuming the baby is

willing to nurse, or express milk by double-pumping.

A schedule might look like this:

Day 1-3 Pump/Express:

7a - 1p - 7p - Rest (3 sessions)

Day 4-6 Pump/Express:

7a - 12p - 5p - 10p - Rest (4 sessions)

Day 7-9 Pump/Express:

7a - 11.30a - 4p - 8.30p - 1a - Rest (5 sessions)

Day 10-12 Pump/Express:

7a - 10a - 1p - 4p - 7p - 10p - 1a - Rest (7 sessions)

Day 13-15 Pump/Express:

7a - 9a - 11.30a - 1.30p - 4p - 6p - 8.30p - 10p - 12.30p - Rest (9 sessions)

Some basics for establishing a satisfying nutsing relationship and building

a milk supply:

* Relax and enjoy the baby -- the mothers emotions are important to her

milk supply;

* Nurse before, after, and bethween feedings for as long as the baby is

willing, no matter if supplements are given and how;

* Avoid pacifiers -- encourage all the babys sucking to be at the breast;

* Nurse during the night -- keep the baby close;

* Nurse on both breasts, at every feeding, if possible;

* Drink enough fluids and eat a well-balanced diet;

* Get enough rest;

* Give up smoking (which can decrease supply) or keep it to a minimum,

cutting down as much as possible.

La Leche League has a book on their website catalog called Nursing Your

Adopted Baby that may be helpful. You may also find a copy at your public

library, at your local La Leche League group library, or at other bookstores.

Welcome!!! I sure hope everything works out with your baby. They are sure a

gift from GOD. A tiny little angel for sure.

My first advice would be start looking for a good pump NOW because you will

want to be started well before the baby arives so you can be prepared for

her/him.

For this kind of task you will need the best of course as the saying goes you

get what you pay for. So the best is the Medela Lactina or Clasica. BUT they

are both about $700.00 SOOO I can understand if you can't or don't feel it's

a good investment. You can also get the Pump in Style also by Medela it is

around 150-200 MUCH less and alot of people think very close to working as

well.

You can contact your Dr (An OB preferably) and ask him about medican that

will promote lactation. There is one called Reglan that he can give you if he

doesan't know of any tell him that name and ask him to find out about it for

you.

There is alot fo Herb that can help induce a supply also. Although not nearly

as effectly as the Reglan but HEY try them ALL

One of my friends was going to adopt a baby and was successful in producing

milk through pumping and medican she would be MORE then happy to give you any

info you need. Her e-mail address is Strkldy@... she said e-mail her

wonderful and a great support.
