Guest guest
With your description of your dad's condition is sounds like he has advanced PSC. Anyone with ascites has significant portal hypertension due to scarring and fibrosis of the liver. Ursofalk is a good general drug for PSC. But your dad may benefit from betablockers to reduce his portal hypertension. He should have a scope to look for esophageal varices (which he undoubtably has) and possible banding of same. In addition he should abstain from any lifting or strenuous exercise. You may wish to ask your mother if she's noticed him being more confused than in the past. He may be showing signs of hepatic encephalopathy. There are some medications to deal with this; lactulose and neomycin are two of them. A low animal protein diet may also help. You don't mention where in Australia your family lives. But there are some good hepatologists in the major centres, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, etc. He should see a Hepatologist who's willing to treat him even if he's not a good candidate for liver transplant. But at this stage he should be evaluated for possible transplant unless there is some obvious reason he wouldn't qualify (age perhaps). Best of luck.
