Guest guest
Thank-You I use nutrasweet, but limited " Freebies " are always nice!! Sandi
Guest guest
Sandi, It's in the files section at the group website..... in the folder titled: " keto recipes.txt " But..... well, here..... I've copied it for you: >>Keto Cookies 2 egg whites (I find this to be 60 g) 1/4 tsp cream of tartar 1/2 to 3/4 box diet jello (any flavour but I think strawberry or raspberry works best) Beat egg whites until stiff. Fold in jello powder and cream of tartar. Drop by teaspoon onto cookie sheet sprayed with Pam. bake at 290 F for 10 to 12 minutes. Kids can have 2 free cookies per day, meaning you don't have to calculate them. But they contain nutrasweet, so be careful, some kids can't take it.<< Patti, mom to Katera Re: Patti What is the " freebie " egg white cookie recipe? Is it the macaroon recipe in the KGD book?? Guest guest
, Yes.... I do think the meds could be interfering. I've noticed that it's sure been the case for quite a few families on this list since I joined 2 and a half years ago. I can't say I've been there.... we weaned meds before we started the diet..... and Katera was never on either Lamictal or Dep..... but I had the lovely experience of having her on Tegretol (pre-diet) and watching her seize more and more and more and the doctor we had at the time insisting that she just needed a higher dose. It ended up being a really bad experience (trip to ER via ambulance and in status for over 2 hours... then ICU for three days recovering from all the drugs they had to use to stop the status). I just know that some of these drugs are causing more problems than they're solving. Many of them (including Tegretol) list " increase in seizures " as one of the potential side-effects of the drug..... ironic, eh? Not something the neuros tell you when they prescribe this stuff. I know quite a few families here have had a tough time with Dep...... lovingly nicknaming it " Depacrap " ....it doesn't seem to be a good mix with the Keto diet. I'd suggest looking back through our archives for any messages with " Depakote " or " Lamictal " in the subject line.... just to read the experiences of others. It's tough to wean, also.... from what I've read. Anyway, it just makes you wonder...... if the drugs were helping, you wouldn't need the diet, right? So why keep them in the mix at all? If it was working, that would be different. Of course, I know many parents feel their child might be having way MORE seizures if not for the drug. I know getting rid of the meds is not an easy choice....especially if the doctor is not too open to the idea.... but it's something to consider. Sometimes there can be withdrawal seizures so if you consider weaning, you'll find that most parents would recommend going very slowly. PS.... another thing I thought of earlier today and wanted to ask you.... Are you using any products with Nutrasweet? Bugs Bunny vitamins? Sodas? Etc? If so, you might consider finding an alternative. Nutrasweet (aspartame) is a neurotoxin and a seizure trigger for many kids and adults. I remember a couple of families here that got control once they dumped it. Patti Patti Patti, Our neuro is a big advocate for the diet and thought it was a good choice to initiate. He did say that it may take longer than 3 months before we even started. My husband and I will be taking a good look over the next few weeks and decide if we should continue a few more months. Do you think the Lamictal or Depakote could be working against the diet to affect the seizure control? I appreciate so very much anything you can suggest or help with. Guest guest
, I think you might see stronger, more stable ketones if you added some flax oil. When Katera was on the diet, I tried to give her about 5 gms of flax oil per day. You don't need much. Have you tried digestive enzymes? Some families here have found them to be really helpful with the diet..... even getting seizure control due to the foods being metabolized better. Enzymes are supposed to be very helpful for autism spectrum kids, too. We used them for a while when Katera was at a higher ratio as an alternative to reflux meds. Really helped her digestion and constipation problems. Patti Patti Patti, Yes her med levels have been pretty much on the medium to low level. had alot of abscence before lamictal. Started lamictal in 1999. The abscence lowered alot until Oct 2000 when the Grands started then the abscence got worse than before she even went on Lamictal. Both Grand and abscence have not got any better since fall 2000. We did try the gluten/casein free diet for 30 days back in 2000. We tried that due to her autism. Did not see any changes in her eyecontact, behavior or seizures. Now I dont know if the casein free part of the diet would be like going dairy free now. Do you think it would be totally different? I sure will contact you if we decided to use the flax oil and/or dairy free. I will keep those possibilities in mind. Thank you for all your help. Guest guest
Patti, 's program was set up by the dietician she received from some parents that used it with their child. I could email you a copy and perhaps you could see if we are making any mistakes with it. It shows 1440 calories a day(480 a meal), 4-1 ratio, 3 meals a day and the stats of Protein-8, Fat-48 and Carbs-4. She only drinks the gingerale when she is sick which has been 2 times in the last 9 weeks, and only consumed about 12ounces all together. Her seizures have been continous throughout the whole diet. hmmmmmm so many things to tweak.
Guest guest
, Sure..... e-mail me a copy of that.... durovchic@... Meanwhile, I can plug her stats into my mealplanner and see how it works. Just to double check.... the protein 8, fat 48, carbs 4 is per meal.... right? I'll assume so. I will work on this later tonight and e-mail you in the morning. Sounds like you don't need to worry about the Nutrasweet in that Gingerale then, if she doesn't drink it every day. One less thing to stress over. Don't worry..... we'll see what we can figure out. Take a deep breath.... you're among friends. The worst that can happen at this point is that you'll quit the diet and go on from there. Let's just see if we can help you optimize everything in order to give it your best shot. Then you can say enough.... if it's just too much. Don't worry.... either way, all will be well!
