Guest guest
Jane, This was just posted on the SCDiet list, written by Elaine Gottschall the biochemist who wrote the book we base this diet on. I know that diet is different from Keto but am just passing along her comments since I just asked about this sweetener on that list this morning. I've been using it almost daily for Katera so I'm sorry to hear this because I have a huge bottle of vanilla syrup that I'd like to keep using. Guess I'll use it for myself. Anyway, here it is, for what it's worth...... Patti ..... read on below: [elaineschildren] Re: Sucralose/ Splenda? I am quoting Elaine: Splenda is a horrible sweetener. I am haunted by what the manufacturer has done to the sucrose molecule. Made it indigestible by putting in chemical bonds that not even a healthy person can break and adding a chlorine atom to each corner of the molecule. OH, boy, what a great new mutated bacterium will develop in the colon when that strange molecule gets down there. Saccharin is the best. Walgreens in Chicago carried it; don't most drugstores in USA have it. In Canada, it goes under another name; just ask the druggist. Guest guest
Well, that's depressing. I have used the SPlenda in Leo's birthday cake -- without ill effects -- but who can speak to the long term. Do you think it would be OK to pass her comments on to Larry the chemist at Kirkman? I'd be interested to hear what he has to say since they are generally so careful. Guest guest
Ann, <<Get thee behind me Patti!!! >> I hope you're kinda joking! Don't mean to be the bringer of bad news. Try doing a Google.com search on these words: " dangers of sucralose " ...... there's quite a lot of info out there on the web about it, including from Dr. Mercola, who has a pretty good rep. Here's one link that I gleaned from my search: AFH LIBRARY - Sucralose Toxicity .... patients in our Wellness Center who have had some severe migraines and even seizures from consuming this product. " The Potential Dangers of Sucralose There's a ... www.alkalizeforhealth.net/Lsweetdebate2.htm - 54k - Cached - Similar pages Doesn't mean that's the final and absolute word on the subject... it's just one perspective. Sorry..... sorry..... sorry! (I like the taste of it, too!) Patti
Guest guest
Jane, Are you sure that the splenda does not affect Leo's sleep seizures? As you can tell from my posts, Shan's sleep seizures do increase with what she eats during the day, and they decrease by taking away certain " foods. " Is Leo doing about the same? Improved? Worse? Guest guest
Rhonda -- at this moment, I'm not sure of anything! Sleep seizures seem a bit worse these days. Longer, and more of them. Sometimes 8 short ones (maybe a minute each) a night. I took out the low-carb bread. Didn't help much. I suppose it could be the Splenda -- but I haven't used it that much. I might have to do a more careful elimination of foods, one by one. And I'm going to try making yogurt with the heavy cream (just got the yogurt maker.) I'm wracking my brain to see what's causing this. I hate to think about dropping the melatonin but if its possibly making seizures worse .... What are the foods that seem to contribute to Shan's sleep seizures? I know you mentioned l the artificial stuff. But anything else? Cocoa? Eggs? Acidic fruits? I don't know what to eliminate first. Guest guest
Jane, I haven't tried giving Cocoa to Shan. And, I haven't tried eliminating any foods like eggs, chicken, beef, fish, fruit, and most vegetable. Because of high carb content I haven't been giving Shan corn, peas, etc. I have found the following to increase seizure activity at night or increase subclinical activity in the form of teeth grinding or teeth chattering during the day: herbs (I don't know which ones but it increased with Mrs. Dash seasoning and teas), flax seed oil, cheese and butter with annato coloring in it, non-filtered water (esp. city water) and a gel color coated supplement. High suspicion but not fully confirmed: lemon flavoring put in soda water, keto friendly koolaid, dyes, Trident gum. Melatonin has actually been a friend to Shan. Prior to her epilepsy becoming uncontrolled, it took a couple hours before she would fall asleep. Melatonin helped her fall asleep quickly and get better rest at night. When we started it (over a year ago) she was having 15+ seizures just trying to fall asleep. It helped her pass quickly through that sleep stage decreasing the sleep seizures to about 2. So, it truely has been a help but I wonder if it no longer is able to help. In other words, now that Shan has reached this far on the diet and seizure control does it's contribution to seizures outweigh it's ability to help lessen seizures? Or, could it be the GNC brand causing problems? I also give Shan GABA before sleep. The GABA is definately still helping. It helps Shan rest through the night. When we don't give it she has a restless night. Have you tried GABA with Leo? Happy yogurt making! Shan had a special kids day at school this last Friday. I mixed yogurt with strawberries and stevia and froze it for a yogurt icecream. She loved it! Because our yogurt maker is not electric I'm not sure if her yogurt is lactose free. I'm watching closely how her body responds to it. So far, she seems to be getting more benefit from the good bacteria then ill effects. We quit giving her cream months ago due to an obvious intolerance so this is a special treat for her to be having yogurt. Plus, its been giving her more energy. I hope Leo enjoys it! Guest guest
Thanks Rhonda, Leo does take two GABA a night. And he can't fall asleep without the melatonin either. I've noticed that there are studies pro and con melatonin vis a vis seizures. I remember hearing at the NYU conference last year about one study that claimed that high dose melatonin (15 mg) actually eliminated night seizures. But doesn't the GNC melatonin have carbs in it? I remember that there was a reason we couldn't use it. I now use Source Natural -- but noticed that Kirkman just started having a melatonin with magnesium. The yogurt, so far, is a hit. Does you and everybody let it sit the full 24 hours? It seems quite done at 12 hours. And since its heavy cream, I doubt it has much lactose in it to begin with. I guess I'm going to have to try eliminating things one at a time and do a little detective work. Jane RE: Sucralose/ Splenda?/ Jane Jane, I haven't tried giving Cocoa to Shan.
