Well I was able to hear Elaine Gottschall tonight in Pittsburgh.

I read her book several months ago and thought I could never do that

with our schedule. My time is somewhat freed up now with in

school all day. Elaine talked about something's tonight that has a

question on the back of my mind for a while now…When is the gf/cf

diet not enough or when do you need to move on? EG really hit a

point with me when she talked about the `whites' that turn into

sugar (Rice and Potatoes) which doesn't heal the gut and how gf can

really not be gf…hmm.

My two biggest concerns are 1--the dairy, especially since was

a 24 hour responder on the gf/cf (but was that because of the casein

itself or the poor shape of his gut?) and 2--eggs. Eggs although a

low number came up on his Sage system test and Hicks said I can cook

with it but he can't eat an egg by itself.

I wonder how these receipts would taste using an egg replacer???

Thoughts anyone?

EG showed slides tonight of good/bad guts and I was ready to cry for

those children. It must have been SO painful, all of the damage. A

parent asked a question that was along the lines of what Hicks wrote

in the ANDI and without his name being mentioned, EG said something

like Oh that Hicks…and we all busted out in laughter.

Meanwhile he does an outreach clinic in Pittsburgh and 3/4th of the

room are families of his! I love a woman who speaks her mind, she

certainly earned a right too!

I think once most of our bulk food is down (like the rice pastas and

crackers) I might do the switch. We are BIG potato eaters, almost

everyday. At this point, I am not going to worry about the long

list of supplements that he is on. To get 34 legal will just be

impossible. Diarrhea is not an issue with us so the diet doesn't

seem to bad to begin it with being that diarrhea is not in play. I

am going to read more and think, think, think..

I think this year Pittsburgh will have to open up the GF/CF cookie

exchange to GF/CF and SCD. Its getting time for that email to

emerge, local bakers!

Thanks for letting me share and for listening,

Hi Marla Jo,

SCD is not an extension or second stage of GFCF. people transition though if

they have plateaued or not done well on GFCF. The diets are actually poles apart

because GFCF allows starch that elaine believes taxes the digestive system. If

you have been GFCF before you have the choice of doing a gradual transition or

going " cold turkey " to SCD.

Also, SCD is proving very successful but may not be for everyone but is worth a

one month trial.

I remember her saying that and I think that `starch' is eating at me

the most. As I listened the more I knew that being gf/cf (since

2002) and then rotating about 4 other things (since 2003) still

isn't best to get the gut where it needs to be. I think it is safe

to say that a fair number of autism families do consider this to

be 'next' diet to try especially if the child's stools are still a

mess. He was a constipation kid and now he is more formed but

soft. I sit on the board of the org. that brought her in and at

dinner she is a firm believer of the gut/brain, I loved what she

had to say, even bringing me to tears with her words. Even know the

diagnoses are different, our story's are strangely familiar. She

gets it, she had too. We are chelating Jr. and now have some yeast

markers so my husband and I know we need to give this the college

try. I am going to plan on slowing removing and added foods like I

did with the gluten removal I think it will be easier because I am

going to put the whole family on it. Like I mentioned before, it

could be almost impossible for me to get him at 100% due to

supplements and such but I know fanatical adherence is my goal. Not

sure of everyone's journey here to this list but I hope not to

offend with my thoughts.

Wish I could have went but I don't know Pittsburgh well enough to

attempt it by myself in the dark as I live so far south.

My son has been on the diet since March 13, 2004 with great

improvements, so much so that I often wonder whether his autism has gone

away and were just playing catch up on his skills.
