Laurie,

I am so sorry that you are having such a hard time. We went through a

similar situation when getting down to 1 pill of depakote and ended up going

back up (we were scared at the time). I have found that the diet and

depakote can be really hard to get the right combiniation. Is he really

ketotic?? Is his face red and he has a sweet smell? My first thought is

that he is ketotic. Maybe fighting off a virus as well. I would check his

ketones in the morning and afternoon and evening for a couple of days. If

they are high in the am then give him some OJ ( 1 tsp) and try to come down

on the ratio. The hard thing about depakote is that it seems to make kids

more ketotic for some reason so maybe you will need less ratio without it

since you are coming off.

Good luck! I know its hard to wean. I also agree with the post about

splitting the dose to am/pm 1/2 pill.

Laurie --- It took us a long time wean the Depakote. We went really slowly

and the last 125 was the worst. We, and other people, did find that we

needed to lower the ratio to 2.9, then 2.7. That could be the problem.

How much was your last drop? Its hard to imagine that dropping from your

last dosage to 125 (unless it was a huge drop) could have caused this, as

125 is a really minimal dose. Probably not even a therapuetic level.

Its hard to say, not knowing the particulars of your case, but you could try

dropping the ratio to 3.2, then 3.0 and see if he improves. I'd try that

before increasing the Depakote again.

Why don't you send us the particulars of your wean? How much you dropped in

how much time?

Jane

Laurie,

<<He has a strange smell but I wouldn't call it sweet - it's more like a vomit

smell >>

Is this a smell that is on his breath? Or otherwise? If it's on the breath,

the smell from ketosis is a sort of acetone smell...... a little like fingernail

polish remover. That is " normal " for keto kids, although Katera only had it when

she was really overly ketotic. If it's more of a " vomit " smell on his breath, I

would highly suspect acid reflux. This is very common on the diet with the kids

that are on higher ratios. Some of his difficulty swallowing could be from that.

If this is the case, I'd say you need a ratio drop for sure..... and if that

doesn't seem to take care of it, have him evaluated for reflux and possibly add

a med. I'm not too much in favor of the reflux meds myself (would rather add

digestive enzymes) but it might give immediate relief..... and it's something

you could just use for a while.
