Hi Debora,

I don't know what Remicade is so I can't tell you what you should

take with it. Can you check with your doctor to find out if you can

take magnesium sulfate (that's epsom salts)? If you can, you can

get the empty gel capsules and fill them with magnesium sulfate (I

gave 12 size 0 caps to my 58 # son and it softened his hard

stools). The only catch to this is that you probably have to get

rid of the stuff that is in the rectum first and you probably need

to do the glycerin suppository again or the enema. Could you do the

enema in the bathtub while you are soaking....sorry, don't mean to

be gross, but you've got to do what you've got to do. I hope you

can find something that works for you. The other thing I wanted to

mention was to try beet juice or beet puree with added Tropicana OJ

at every meal to help with the constipation. We tried the boiled

down prune juice with Tropicana OJ and it didn't help our son very

much but the beet puree gave a bit more relief. He is still

constipated but we don't use epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) unless

he gets to the same level of constipation that you are currently

facing at this time. Oh, I wanted to add, any kind and any form of

nuts was and is a huge constipator for our son. Hope this helps and

take care, Becky in Chesapeake, VA with 10 yr old son with ASD on

You might already know this but it bears repeating (at least for the

newbies) Constipation is just the other side of bowel disease and

raw vegetables will only compound it. If you can't digest it can

and usually does make either diarrhea or constipation worse.

Making sure all food is well cooked and peeled will help, lots of

fluids and the Oj and prune *nectar* combo. Some have had success

with beet puree or bet juice. When I was impacted the ER doctor

gave me fleet enemas to clear everything out. (It actually took two

enemas) You can buy these over the counter here. But it doesn't

sound as if you are that far along - I was having cramps

(reminiscint of early labour pains)

ann, I think I have a tendency toward constipation for whatever

reason, so now I load up on fiber - about as much as you're taking,

I'd say. What I did was to go to a health food place and got a

total cleanse thing which took a few weeks but cleans out all the

toxins that have built up. When that process was finished I made

sure I continued with a lot of fiber and I've been fine since.

I know the feeling you're experiencing and it's not pleasant. I'd

suggest trying the cleanse.

I just had a colonoscopy in Feb and took that horrible bowel prep 4 X

in one day. I went steadily for 16 hours. Wouldn't that cleanse me

enough?

Hi,

I'm still on week 3, so that's why I'm only up to one serving of

fruit so far. Which fruits have a laxative effect?

If I lower my protein, I honestly don't know what to eat instead.

Could you post a few days worth of all your meals/snacks so I could

see what you are eating in place of protein?

ann

No, I don't like it. Luckily it goes away most of the time, but returns

periodically.

This time of year I tend to eat apples and oranges, some bananas. When they

are in season, peaches. Probably in a rut with those. Prior to SBD I ate

almost no fruit and didn't have the problem. Same with vegetables - they

were once in a while, now I eat a lot more (but probably still not enough).

Go figure.

That's how it is with me, too, Chuck. I hardly ate any fruit before

and I ate much less veggies, yet I didn't have this problem. Ever

since SBD, with the added veggies and fruit, now I have the problem.

I eat less protein now than before. Makes no sense.

I know what constipation is, LOL, that is why we are having this

discussion. All cheese, even cottage cheese? Or just hard cheeses?

ann

<

> Constipation is when you have to go but " it " won't come out.

There is a harmless procedure that is very quick. Dip a Q-tip into

a bottle of mineral oil (this can be found in any drug store). I

(Older folks can probably go the entire length of the Q-tip just

fine and may want to do this two or three times.) This allows the

oil to soften the stool. Older folks should lie down and wait as

long as possible. Older kids will probably prefer to do this

themselves.

Hi,

Okay, I put prunes on my shopping list for next weekend. I like them

in oat bran cereal, but haven't had that in quite a while. So, I

will start that. And will get more apples. I also put some sugar-

free dried apples on the list, too, to have in hot cereal.

Dates are okay to have? I thought I saw either in the good carb book

or the regular book that they are too high on the glycemic index.

Oh my goodness, I couldn't eat one more bite of vegetables, I eat so

many as it is.

I think I need a second refrigerator, LOL.

Hi Chuck...

Bananas I believe can be constipating.. Did you eat this much cheese before SB and do you know how many grams of protein you were injesting before?

I have very little doubt you did not have a problem before... most people don't..

Do you mean three 2-4 oz servings of protein a day? Since legumes are

a protein source, you mean just lower my animal protein, right? Mainly

cut/lower my cheeses and meats? But, yogurt is okay?

And how many servings of beans should I have a day? They count toward

grams of protein on Fitday, so my protein percentage/amount will still

look high from the beans.

I wish I knew how to make beans so that they didn't taste awful. I

don't mind frozen limas with margarine. And lentils, if cooked right,

are good. And other beans are okay in soups and stews. But, to heat

them up out of a can, yuk. Guess I need to make more soups and stews

with beans, plus get more limas, plus make more lentils.

I was the same way. The doctor told me that it was cuz I had all that grease and stuff before and that's what kept me going to the bathroom. Now that I don't have all that garbage, I get constipated too. But I've found if I eat an apple in the morning I go a little bit later. It seems to have helped a ton. I don't think specially in phase one you should lower your protein. I think it's important. Doctor told me did fine with what I had and gave me a list of things to help the constipation, but only the apples seem to help for whatever reason. I do take stool softeners and sometimes suppositories if I need them, not that they are pleasant but only take about 20 minutes and I'm all better. Carol

Oh, dear, ann!! This is NOT good! You didn't mention anything about water. Water is a natural laxative. Exercise really helps with elimination too. As far as fruit goes, how about prunes that are flavored with essential oils, like orange, lemon and lime. Those are good. Be sure you drink plenty of water when you eat the dried fruit.

I hope you get to feeling back to normal.

Hi,

I drink probably a gallon of water a day, maybe more.

I can't get much exercise as I'm a wheelchair user. But, I'm doing

range of motion and stretches in the chair and leg lifts in the bed.

Never heard of flavored prunes, LOL. Sounds kind of funny. I like

them plain okay enough. I will get them on the next shopping order.

I think the main problem is the lack of fruit in our diet during phase 1. Junk food is great from keeping us regular but not a healthy solution.

I'd say the cheese intake would be about the same as before SBD. I'm

consuming more ham.

Before SBD nothing was in grams -- it was all pounds ;-)

I can easily increase my apple consumption.
