I have 2 sons with autism - and ph. has OCD as well and even though he asks for something and knows he can't have it - he needs me to repeat after him after I tell him the answer and also write it down for him on a smal index card(i.e. We can do that in July or No that is not something we can do right now. ) He will repeat and repeat - sometimes for a few days in a row and he really doesn't stop until I repeat after him the same tone and speed he is saying it - like a back and forth rhythm until he starts feeling satisfied that I heard him even though he can't have it -go there - do that etc....

I can so relate with this…. What

our behaviorist told me was to respond with “ask one time only”. This

did help once she got the idea so keep at it as a regular response to his

requesting. Now we are just working on accepting “No” as the

answer. J

My son goes through phases with this, say it one time only, only works some times...if it is really bad I take the phrase or questions and expand it...example: if he is repeatedly saying "elephant lives in the jungle" I ask about the size of the elephant , what color...etc..and will ask what other animals live in the jungle..where is the jungle and use a globe or book to show where jungles are located ..I do not want to minimize the verbalizations, but I try and redirect them into a more meaningful and conversational context...the perseveration can be maddening at times but I try to redirect it into a learning possibility and a way to try and structure his language use in a more appropriate way.. I have been told that this language function is a frontal lobe issue and is tied with GABA ...anyone

have any other ideas on this? oh...and he used to have a verbal stim, eeeee sound when he was very young..gone now .so I think there is still some stimming with the repetition, and if he is tired it is worse... Thanks for your answer... I do that too when he's repeating a line from a movie

or something...I expand and try to make him talk about it.

But my greatest issue is the repetition of a request, for something that he

either can't have, period, or something he can have but has to wait like 2 or 3

minutes.

Example, yesterday we were going to the bookstore and he kept repeating that he

wanted to go to the bookstore, wanna go to the bookstore...on and on, and I told

him once that we were going, stop asking just wait we're gonna be there soon.

Well, he didn't stop, I turned the car and came back home. I told him he didn't

get to go because of all the repetition and he was fine, went to play with

something else... Ughhhhh

That's what I do, and then just ignore him...but it's getting out of hand and

getting in the way of therapy and such... I also knows that he does it to escape

a task, like he'll say he wants Mommy, and then when I show up he gets up and

goes to get a book...AND doesn't even look at me!!

The key to shaping and redirecting behavior is to out last your son. Say No once and your explanation once. When he asks you again and again and again ignore him completely. My son is the same way and his behavior has changed with this intervention. It may seem never ending but I bet if you, and anyone else that cares for him is consistent the nagging will stop. The ABA therapist taught me that when the ASD children become verbal they will often use that as verbal combat and you can nip it in the bud. I did, just stick to it and do not back down. My son goes through phases of doing this, but I usually ignore him and quickly change the subject. This usually works. If I distract him and give him a job to do or talk about something else that is interesting to him, he won't bring it up, but like all behaviors, the more you pay attention to them, the more they will escalate. I have two children with autism too and I know where you are coming from. Mine are 12. It is difficult because the constant repetion can drive you crazy if you let it. It's also summer so all of our kids are "off schedule", possibly making them act a little different than usual. As ironic as it may seem, sometimes the best thing to do is to

do nothing. Otherwise you become a participant in his behavior.
