Oh, is there a gene for alcoholism. I think one of the big announcements

about a 'gene found for alcocolism' was about ten years ago. It was a few

years before that that succesful " cold fusion " was announced, but I haven't

heard about any real advances in either one. :-/

There's a lot of alcoholism info at the SOS/LSR site, you might want

to surf around there to see what you can find on the topic:

Thanks I will look it up...Ive tried searching other sites with no

luck so far so maybe this will help..

Sorry If I sounded angry, but Im confused at the moment over this question

of alcoholism....and I quite honestly dont believe I have a 'disease' when I

am quite capable of controlling it......something AA told me I could NEVER

do!

watch this space

Regards

Hi folks

Today a very interesting e-mail containing a tidbit about this subject

came to me. Here's part of it:

******************************************************************

" my mom works at a major university med school that does a tremendous

amount

of study-based research (apparently far more than any other med school

setting, since they receive huge amounts of government and private

funding.)

When I talk to her about what's going on at work the " studies " are

usually

the topic of conversation, since she oversees the organization of the

studies and the grant money available. Last night we were discussing

it and

I asked her if I could share some of the stuff she told me with people

in

the " anti-disease concept " school of thought. She said it would be

okay if

it was totally anonymous and the school wasn't mentioned, nor the

specific

studies (i.e. anything that would directly link the info. to the

school/research center she works for.) so here goes, I'm quoting her

as best

I can:

" The doctors can't stand the studies on alcoholism, and it's become a

joke

(at the office)...they (the studies) are referred to as " the drunken

rats "

(since some involve rats or other animals). They're all sick of so

much

attention on alcoholism and the common belief we have is that the

disease-nonsense is being taken too far...of course the reports of the

completed studies never actually say " alcoholism is a disease " since

the

supervising (physicians in charge of the research) don't want to be

credited

with that kind of revelation...the family studies (the ones that try

to show

that alcoholism is inherited) usually target lower class families

since the

docs know that those environments are more likely to have entire

alcoholic

families...that's why the ads to the public are run in the urban

papers and

offer small sums of money for participation. Of course they don't

have much

choice but to conclude that the study participants also have alcoholic

relatives, otherwise the study might be questioned. I've heard

discussion

among the docs...some of them have come to me stating it also...to the

effect that they hope that the government and the major donors will

stop all

the pressure for more research on addiction so the funding can be used

for

more crucial stuff like cancer research. "

" The stuff in paretheses is stuff I added for clarification. I

checked with

her this morning and she quickly looked it over and said it was

accurate and

again just asked that it be totally anonymous. "

******************************************************************

Any thoughts?

Best,
