Daily weight fluctuation of a few pounds is normal, although 6 pounds is a

bit much. How much water are you drinking? I caught in another posting

that you and dairy don't seem to get along very well -- have you been

consuming much dairy?

Whenever you make a significant dietary change you should discuss it with

your physician -- especially if you suffer hypoglycemia, diabetes, or

similar conditions that are so dependent upon diet.

If you've been in phase 1 all this time, I have to wonder just what you're

doing that is so much higher in carbs than you ate while on Atkins. Aside

from fat, the two diets aren't that dissimilar. What are you eating that is

so different? What kind of yogurt are you eating? How much fiber have you

been getting?

IBS is trickier. Fiber can really bother you if you have it. You have to be careful about how you eat your fiber. One thing I found out this past couple weeks is that the raw fruits and vegetables I was eating on this diet were worsening my IBS and making me constipated. It seems like it should do the opposite, but with IBS, that is how it can affect you. This week, I have cut back on salads, cut out raw veggies for snacks, starting cooking my vegetables more soft and started baking my apples or having applesauce instead of eating them raw, and am feeling a lot better. If you don't want to boil the nutrients out of the veggies, but want them soft, you can cook them in soups, stews, quiches, etc., or steam them longer.

Hmm, ya know since you say this I've been eating A LOT of lettuce bc of my salads. And I hear that can be real hard to digest if you have certain problems. I've also had my gall bladder removed and that makes things difficult for me. So let's see, I'll switch to the Lactaid, cut the lettuce, because really lettuce is the only thing I eat that's raw, and I'll get the Lactaid pills tomorrow, and also see if I can cut out some protein. And I'll start all over again tomorrow bc I took my 7 year old out for pizza after baseball practice tonight >shakes head in shame< Do you take medication for IBS? Is there any? My 5 lbs isn't in constipation, trust me, it's in my hips LOL That thing on my butt that looks like I'm carrying around a lifesaver is back too.

Some people with IBS can't have dairy at all. That can cause constipation. I haven't noticed any problem with my having dairy, though. Try the Lactaid. If the Lactaid pills and Lactaid milk (the 100% lactose reduced) don't help you, then maybe the dairy itself is irritating IBS. We don't have to have the dairy on SBD if we can't have it.

Thanks for the links, I'm reading right now.annHmmm, I've always thought I probably do have IBS but can't get a doctor to diagnose it or give me anything for it. They're just like, well, just eat more fiber.....errrr......I am almost sure it's the dairy causing it. I haven't touched dairy in sooooo long, well except for cheese. But I mean I haven't eaten yogurt or milk or anything for a couple years and I"m only eating it now cuz Dr A says so LOL I will definitely try the Lactaid pills and the Lactaid milk. Could it be what's stopping me from losing weight too?

In Induction of Atkins, you do not eat as much vegetables as you do on SBD. Which have carbs in them even if they are good carbs. You eat no milk products except yogurt IF it doesn't stall you. Since Atkins is high fat and SBD is not, when you remove fat from something, its usually replaced by carbs.....or sugar for flavor. Pick up a jar of regular salad dressing and a bottle of light salad dressing. The light salad dressing will have more carbs than the regular. As for fiber, I take about 2 tablespoons of benefiber everyday. But the link reading of the IBS was interesting and I've been doing just about everything it says not to, go figure. Except they recommend a rather high starch and carby diet and I ain't goin there. So that explains the bloating to me, but doesn't explain to me why I'm not losing weight. NONE..Zip....zilch..... But I am going to try everything everyone has said to me and see if

it helps.

If you're lactose intolerant, that could easily explain the bloating you're

experiencing. There's also the potential of irritable bowel syndrome or

possibly too much fiber (which plays into IBS).

True -- but you're nowhere near to being in induction. During induction

you're limited to what, 20g of carbs a day? After that, when you enter OWL,

you add back in vegetables. SBD is set up a bit differently but phase 1 is

something like being in Atkins OWL, without the high fat.

Atkins OWL is similar to SBD's phase 2 in that you gradually add carbs in 5g

increments until you find your Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing

(CCLL). In SBD, you do very much the same by adding back certain foods

until you find that point at which your weight loss stops. Granted, Atkins

is a bit more precise and scientific about it but the basic idea is very

similar.

What was your CCLL? Did you ever make it to pre-maintenance?

Or salt. Fat, sugar, and salt -- the three flavors of the food industry.

Is your diet deficient in fiber?

I did some reading on IBS a while back that said starchy/carby foods were

also a problem. I really need to take the time to learn more about it.

Well, you've got me vexed. I can usually pinpoint what the issue is but

this one isn't as easy. The constipation and bloating are undoubtedly

affecting your weight loss. You've spent entirely too much time on phase 1

(and did I just read you want to restart again?) -- you need to move on to

phase 2. In your case, I REALLY think daily tracking with FitDay would be

helpful in hammering out what's going on. I still think you should do a

follow-up with your doctor as well.

The only medicines they seem to use are medications to correct

whatever symptoms you currently have, such as Miralax for

constipation, Kaopectate for diarrhea, Metamucil for fiber/regularity,

etc. Charcoal pills work for gas, but they also absorb your vitamins,

so I don't use them.

I had just as much dairy on Atkins as I do on SBD.

When I did Atkins, I always ate quiches with plenty of cheese and

heavy whipping cream in them. I made chicken breaded with Parmagiana

cheese. I ate cheeses like provolone and mozzarella for snacking. Even

cheese crisps (fried cheese). Those were all Atkins recipes.

My hubby is still on Atkins and he eats quiches loaded with cheese and

heavy whipping cream, plus sugar free puddings made with heavy

whipping cream. He doesn't eat cheese for snacks, just because he

doesn't like cheese unless it's cooked in something.

At the time I was doing Atkins, I didn't have yogurt. But, now they

have those low carb yogurts and my husband is eating those. So, there

is plenty of dairy on Atkins.

(3 ounces of cream cheese, 1 egg beaten, 1/4 tsp vanilla, 1 tsp of

lemon juice, splenda. Melt the cream cheese slowly in a saucepan

over low/med heat Add the vanilla, splenda and lemon juice and stir

til smooth. Add your beaten egg and continue to stir and cook til it

begins to set. Careful not to overcook it. )

My husband now has yogurt on Atkins, also. There was no low-carb

yogurt back when I did it. Not that I knew of, anyway.

Wow -- I had no idea you could do dairy during Induction. I really need to

re-read the book/guidelines for Atkins -- it's been a while.
