Bonnie,

I have finally had time to come back to the posts from Wed. and Thurs. I

can't remember what I wrote even.

But basically we now think Tyler has had Childhood onset Bipolar all these

years and he was in the midst of a cycle during that time frome. It came to

a head Wed. night. Biggest problem right now is because of my work I am

aware of the symptoms and my husband is not. I have numerous people who

work in this area, who I have shared my concerns with -people who deal with

really bad stuff and they are all very concerned and do not think I am

" imagining it from reading too much psychology stuff " . My bosses words (a

behavioral and developmental psychologist) were that his hair would stand on

end if he heard Tyler say the things I was hearing him say last week and

that I should be concerned.

Roy agrees that personality wise Tyler is going to have some pain as he

learns how to be an adult, but for me it is bigger than that. Picture just

sending Patty out into the world, because that was " just her makeup " and

expecting her to just learn from the pain and improve with no understanding

of what was going on inside of her that leads to obsessions or whatever and

no tools on how to manage it for herself. That is Roy's philosophy. For

me, if Tyler does have bipolar, he may not be ready to acknowledge it or

take meds for it, but I have to at least start the process now. He is 18

years old in 2 months, and then mom is not the one filling in the gaps in

the doctor's office. He plans on moving out at 18 and he is NOT READY!

Kim

For any of you who have mood cycles - do not let them drink energy drinks!

Monster, Red Bull and the like.

I was observing that when Tyler started the energy drinks he started going

into his " mania " stuff. We found a case study that actually documents a

young man with bipolar who had been stable on lithium for 5 years, who drank

3 energy drinks one night, 3 more a few nights later, and had full blown

hospitalization required mania for 7 days. Tyler has been stable on his

omega 3 fatty acids for 2 1/2 years. I have no doubt that the energy drinks

is what caused him to have this latest cycle.

Kim,

So sorry to hear this. I work with a lot of people who have bipolar, some

of who have full insight, some of who do not. Those with insight have much

better luck of course in controlling the illness, recognising early onset,

seeking out the various treatments and assistance, taking preventative steps

etc. All I can wish for you under these circumstances is that Tyler does

get to a point of recognising and taking control sooner rather than later.

Bipolar is a very painful illness to live with, both for the sufferer and

family so lots of luck and I hope the steps you take to start dealing with

it are productive.

I find it very scary. Am thankful after the come down that he decided he

did not want to do the energy drinks. I guess for now that is pretty good

insight. Kim

Lesley,

Bipolar is commonly known as " manic depression " and is a form of mental

illness/disorder. As far as I am aware, it does not appear to feature in

CHARGE but of course anyone can be susceptible to any form of mental

illness. Of course our kids have the problems of emotional regulation but

this is definitely not the same. Kim's son Tyler she is referring to in the

post does not have CHARGE. It is her other son Dylan who has CHARGE.

Kim, Kim, Kim...

Oi-vay. What do you do when the other parent doesn't get it and you're

talking about something so critical?? I have no clue. But I hope you

figure it out and come to some kind of " meeting of the minds " so that Tyler

gets the support he needs to manage as an adult. Especially considering

he'll be an adult so soon! Eegads! How did that happen?

Kim - I can only imagine the knots in your stomach and the stress you are

feeling right now. If anyone can figure it out, you can. My thoughts are

with you.

OMG DEAR KIM __BIPOLAR

Flo just explained this I thought it was Tyler = charge, but of

course its Dylan and charge, this is awful for you all. as if you

dont have enough to contend with now this.

Dont know what to say, no advice out of my league, but I know from

the postings if any mum on here could cope with this extra SH** then

you can, you're such a strong and clever women.

Either way I will be thinking of you all, and hope if there is help

for this Tyler gets it soon and by the best doctors.

Love Lesley

thanks FLO!!

Hi Lesley,

My son Tyler is my oldest, who does not have CHARGE. (Believe it or not he

has taken far more mommy energy than Dylan and is responsible for the

majority of my gray hairs.) Bipolar is commonly known as manic depression.

It just looks different in kids, so is often confused with ADD until they

get older. Regardless, you all can still relate to my heart ache at one

more thing for him to have to deal with.

He is back to his usual happy go lucky self, so I will try not to get sucked

back into thinking " Oh this is nothing " and let my last window before he is

18 disappear. Kim

Videotaping so the doc could see the change in his eyes, the change in his

body - I sure wish I had recorded the stuff coming out of his mouth Wed.

night. Journaling for Tyler, now that would be a miracle! Kim
