Guest guest
I would like to extend a big, huge thank you to all who have recently signed Noah’s guestbook. We have had a very tough 24 hours. There is nothing too HUGE going on, but he has not been a happy camper…and that is not the norm for him. He was frustrated this morning with some pain and itching on his back with the sores he has recently started having. He asked me if it was this “stupid disease” that was making him feel this way. Unfortunately, I did not know, but coming to the web and showing him the support and that he is not alone sure helped him get off to school today. I NEVER thought I would use it like that. He said he does not want to be different. This is the first time I have heard anything remotely close to this coming from him. Thankfully, it did pass when I showed him how many others are out there and are thinking of him. He almost seemed ashamed that he had said what he did. I think it is tough when you can not lay eyes on others who have the disease and he is on the internet to socialize and get support yet. So thank you from both of us for saving the day. Thank you from me for giving me a safe place where I can go and learn, commiserate, and even goof around sometimes. All of it is therapy for me. Noah goes at 3:30 today for a look at the back issue. The hepatologist did not think it was medication related since he has been on the meds for a long time. She thought it could be viral though and that the pediatrician could handle it. So, here’s to hoping that is the case. P.S. A laugh for all you busy moms out there (or any other space cadet…not meaning all moms are space cadets like me). I called to get Noah in and they could see him at 11:15 this morning. GREAT! I called the school to let them know and …duh…he is not there today…he is at the Math Olympics in Gettysburg. So, I called and confessed my DUH moment to the nurse at he peds office and she kindly rescheduled me and laughed that I would fit right in with her. www.caringbridge.org/pa/nwmartens

Guest guest
, Is Noah on prednisone, or has he recently gotten off of prednisone? Suzanne got hives from Sulfasalazine, but it was after she was on it for quite some time. The GI was positive the hives were not from the Sulfasalazine because she was on it so long without any hives (even though I explained that she had a small rash from Erythromycin w/sulfa when she was very young). He sent us to our pediatrician who had no clue, so she sent us to a specialized pediatrician. The specialized pediatrician works with kids who are “medically complex”. She was fairly certain it was the sulfasalazine and immediately took her off of it (after consulting with the GI). The hives left. The explanation we were given is that although she was on it for along time, she was also on prednisone during that time, which was controlling the hives. Once we took her off the prednisone the hives were able to rear its ugly head. I hope this makes sense! So, if he has been on steroids and they have been recently decreased or discontinued, they may have been controlling the side effects of the medication.
