Guest guest
Hi all of you from US. (and Pete) This campaign has been totally hypnotic, so therefore I think people from other parts of the world have a right to interfere, discuss and comment this revolutionary serial. As a child I loved the Westerns with Wayne. To me, he's my image of a Texan. Bush is Texan. Does this mean that Wayne wasn't? I don't understand. Guest guest
Bush is a transplanted Connecticut preppie, not a real Texan. Actually very few inhabitants of Texas are real Texans. Most " Texans " are what we used to call " carpetbaggers. " otoh, Al Gore is a Tennesseean, like Davy Crockett and me. If he had just made a few campaign appearances wearing a coonskin cap he would have won his home state, hence the election, with ease. Unfortunately Gore didn't think of this because he lost a lot of his Tennessee smarts when his daddy sent him to prep school. I hope this makes the situation perfectly clear ;-) --wally Texas Bush or Wayne. > Hi all of you from US. But if he had been a real john, then it probably would have come out in a political campaign (get it? it's a pun based on calling a guy who is a consumer of a prostitute's services, a " john " ! hahahahaha, I crack myself up). > http://www.johnwaynebirthplace.org/ > > I guess the real question before us is: Was he a real Duke? Guest guest
Just had to second all that: Like most people in " the Triangle " (NC), I'm from somewhere else. We even have a city right next to Raleigh, the state capital, named Cary, which locals (and even the actual residents there) jokingly refer to as standing for the " Centralized Area of Relocated Yankees. " Though certain s/he exists, I've yet to meet someone " from Cary " who wasn't originally from somewhere " up North. " Incidentally, my hometown is on the cultural " cusp, " Richmond, Virginia, the only place where I've seen blue hair (punks, not old people), a nose rings (plural), Birkenstocks with argyle socks, a rugby shirt, and bib overalls on the same person at the same time(!) and a redneck, hippie/beatnik (look it up, kids), yuppie, and biker all trapped in the same body(!), a body which, in any given case, may be outwardly African, European, Asian, otherwise, or some mixture in ancestry! As " southern " as Richmond is, residents and visitors quickly learn not to stereotype or, at the very least, to do so jokingly! Seriously, even without the controversy of immigration, America IS becoming the extreme kind of melting pot it has previously only given lipservice to, although I prefer the admittedly unctously New-Agey metaphor of the salad, wherein all parts retain at least some of their individuality. It's only logical that that fact would be reflected in the images of our future leaders, as much as they may otherwise make me flinch, quiver, and, sometimes, laugh. (I can just see Gore getting in trouble with the PC-speech police for wearing and making reference to his " coonskin cap. " ) Aloha, y'all. --Klyphton --- wally wrote: > Bush is a transplanted Connecticut preppie, not a > real Texan. Actually very > few inhabitants of Texas are real Texans. Guest guest
I think you confuse Texan for cowboy. Though the American football Cowboys are from Texas, most cowboys originated elsewhere, including the Duke. But how did we get onto this subject anyway. Texas Bush or Wayne. Hi all of you from US. Guest guest
hi everyone.. bjorn i am very happy that i was able to communicate using a little bit of danish, even though i know it's not much. i wanted to wait until i could look up the other words to reply, and i am going to do it this weekend, but i didn't want to delay anymore in just saying hi and " Hvordan har du det? " as for famous texans, selena the tragically murdered pop star, and ross perot, that quirky irritable politican who founded the reform party come to mind. Farvel sålænge until soon, and let every vote count :-) p.s. bill daley's reply to james baker's statement that the repubs will not seek a recount in iowa: " we will return the favor by not seeking a recount in texas. Guest guest
Hey Toth... Ive lived in Northern Virginia my entire adult life (I'm 51) and had always considered myself a Virginian, too. Right up until I spent a year as an intern in the General Assembly while grad school in Richmond two years ago. It was like moving to a different planet. The racial tension there is palpable. The real estate industry divides the Henrico-Richmond-Chesterfield market into " zones " which just happen to overlay the racial distributions and agents don't take black clients into white areas. I don't know how they get away with it. Virginia is 47th in the nation in spending on mental health, mental retardation and substance abuse and the Republican governors gleefully chop the budgets of local community services boards (I was a member of one for three years during the -Gilmore admins) while singing about the 'Faith Community " . The Old Dominion aristocracy bleeds Northern VA (as well as Tidewater) of cash while whining that the congestion and overt development are local problems. Simultaneously, the GA refuses to give localities the authority to curb developers under the rubric of " we're a property rights state " . There are a few bohemian areas in Richmond like the Fan and Shockoe Bottom, but for the most part, Richmond is a throwback to the 50s. As a new MSW with a liberal bent, I did the only reasonable thing. I moved across the river to land! Sorry! Guest guest
Medical Discharge but the truth is I was ready to go anyway. It had stopped being fun right around the time Bush Senior started the 20% reduction. I was part of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) team for the Marine Corps Reserves Headquartered in NOLA. Before it became known as BRAC. Talk about a political nightmare. It was my job to create and maintain personal/demographic profiles for every senator/rep where the Marine Corps had a Reserve center. While we didn't lie we definitely skewed the presentations to appear to favor whoever we happened to be presenting to at the moment. There was an incredible amount of high level interest in the team's work and everyone (who was anyone) attempted to influence the final recommendations. I learned, during that time, if we could pull out of Joint Reserve Centers first we could transfer closure costs, in some cases, to the tune of millions to the remaining service. The Navy taught us that. It became a foot race to see who could abandon reserve centers fastest. All of it left a bad taste in my mouth. I'll stop here and believe me I just cut a long rant out of this message. > Re: Texas Bush or Wayne. > > >Mucho siento. > >How come you didn't do the extra nickel, if I may be so bold as to ask. No offense taken. I was a Northern Virginian. I didn't realize the magnitude of the difference until I spent some time observing the state government on it's home turf, as well as the cultural differences in Richmond. Unfortunately, The General Assembly would have to vote to allow the counties and independent cities of Arlington, Falls Church, Fairfax and andria to leave the Commonwealth and become the 51st state. Guest guest
Sounds like a tough job. I knew a guy in AA in Virginia who is a pentagon representative to the communities where base closings happen. Basically he was a lightning rod for all the anger and political flack that ensues. Held town meetings where he had stuff thrown at him and was spit on, etc. Are you SC for the medical conds?
