Dr. Chatani in Ft. Lauderdale has been great for my kids

Subject: Any Dentist Referrals in Broward County ?To: sList Date: Saturday, June 13, 2009, 3:53 PM

Hi all! My son is 2 & 1/2 - PDD NOS. He is oversensitive to sounds, and has a partial facial paralysis (lower lip)... so since he has been through so much Speech Therapy and facial stretches he freaks out with anyone coming near his mouth. He brushes his teeth (loves to), but it's time to get into the dentist. Any suggestions?

My son who has gone to Dan and Arnold in Ft. Lauderdale, since he was

about 2. They are wonderful with him. My son is now an adultm, and panicked at

the thought of going to another dentist, so these wonderful dentists told him

that he could continue seeing them as long as he was comfortable doing so. I

don't know if they are accepting new patients or not, or if the would be able to

help your child, but if you call and speak with them and they aren't able to,

they will recommend someone who can. They can even give mild sedation for the

visits.

We love Dr. Chatani in Fort Lauderdale. She is very sensitive to kids with special needs and it is good to start early so that your son can get comfortable with dental visits. Inform the assistant (she usually answers the phone) about your son's sensitivities. She has videos that play to keep the kiddos occupied and she never, ever forces anything. If something cannot be accomplished the first visit, another visit will be scheduled which will help prep the kid for what is expected and the kid will be more likely to participate the next time around. Even with all the prepping I did for xrays, my son was not fully prepared for what was expected. Putting those things in his mouth was really uncomfortable and trying to explain their necessity was challenging. So, we did what we could and at our next visit, he was prepared and willing to participate. It also gave me some time to think of strategies to get him to sit through it. We did a count down and "frozen like a popsicle" sorta thing.

My son has been seeing her since he was 3 and we really respect her. Once while we were there, another child was getting teeth pulled or fillings or something likely difficult as she had some gas. The assistant said she needed a lot of work done as she had neglected her teeth (or her parents had rather). the kid was I think 10 or so. Anyway, Dr. Chatani was so gentle and understanding and did not do anything to that girl without preparing her first and she went really, really slow. Like the girl was the only one she had to take care of that day.

Bad news is she does not take our insurance but she is so worth it for our son.

It used to be that the go-to guy for pediatric dentistry in Broward County was Denis Trupkin. I am not sure what the story is with payment / insurance now. His office is in Plantation. Now his daughter, Abby Wilentz, is part of the practice. Call first and talk to them, see how they feel about working with your child. My experience is that the staff is uniformly sensitive and caring.
