It is thought that if a DR does an episiotomy then it will be a nice clean

line in which to suture and if a woman tears naturally chances are it would

be a jagged tear possibly several layers deep in different directions which

would be very complicated to suture and require more time to heal. When my

husband delivered our baby my doc was showing him how to do perineal massage

which must have worked because I delivered a 9lb8ouncer without a single

tear! I believe you can also do this prior to delivery...
