HOW TO DO THE COTTAGE CHEESE TEST

" How big is my pouch? " Most WLS patients want to know at some

point. Don't do this test until you are at LEAST THREE months post

op! The stomach pouch will enlarge somewhat over the months post

WLS. Some enlargement is due to an actual increase in pouch size.

Some is due to softening, regaining elasticity of the pouch and

outlet. The functional size varies with factors such as time of

day, amount of time taken to eat, type of food eaten.

Buy a container of small curd, low-fat cottage cheese. First thing

in the AM, on an empty stomach, open it up and mark with magic

marker inside where the top of the cottage cheese is. This will be

your breakfast today. Eat fairly quickly for less than 5 minutes,

just until you feel full. This is so the pouch will fill rapidly

before there's time for much to flow out again.

You now have a partly eaten container of cottage cheese. Measure 16

oz of water in a measuring cup. Pour the water gently into the

container of cottage cheese until the water is level with the mark

you made inside the container.

The amount of water you poured into the container is the functional

size of your pouch. How many ounces of water are left in the cup?

Subtract that number from the 16 ounces you started out with. That

is how many ounces your pouch is now.

Don't panic! You will likely find the size of the pouch is bigger

than what your surgeon made. The average mature pouch size is 5.5

(five point five) ounces. Research shows that if your pouch stays

between 3 to 9 ounces in size it will not affect your success in

weight loss.
