I hope someone can help me with this. I have a request for information

on a McGovern Pacifier. I seem to remember that we had a request on the

List a long time ago and didn't have any luck locating it then. This

request comes from Brazil where the doctor has advised the family to get

one.

Is anyone familiar with this?

I remember when Kennedy was born, they cut the tip off of a McGovern Pacifier

and put it in her mouth, tying it to her face, to help her breathe. This was

their first " treatment " for keeping her mouth open to breathe with the bilateral

choanal atresia. They are older and they are large and black. The old ENT

books/treatment options for choanal atresia include the use of the McGovern

Nipple - Here is a link to that type of info:

http://www.utmb.edu/otoref/Grnds/choanal.htm

Interestingly, we opted to " not " use the McGovern Nipple after about a day or

two as it was so large and uncomfortable for Kennedy to keep in her mouth. We

tried an oral airway, which was MUCH nicer for her to breathe through. Graeme

took his little MacGyver knife and slit two holes down each side of the mouth

piece, and we ran trach ties up through it in a " V " to tie it around her head

like a mask instead of taping itll onto her face. Picture can be seen here:

I can't find a picture of a McGovern Nipple n, but if someone really

wants to see it, give me a shout and I'll dig through Kennedy's baby pics...
