I like to think of it as pacifiers being designed to be used like a breast nipple as opposed to saying she is using you as a pacifier. Pacifiers were created so that formula fed babies could do non-nutritive sucking without getting a ton of formula and getting sick. Babies are very good at changing the pattern of sucking to get what they need at the breast. Since milk doesn't come pouring out like from a bottle they are able to modify their suck to just gain comfort and not get a lot of milk. This comfort sucking is very important for some babies. Others seem to not really need it. Each baby has a different level of sucking need. I find that meeting all my babies needs at my breast help me to feel confident and capable. (not saying that someone who chooses a paci, is not either of those but just a personal feeling I get) For me personally relying on bottles and pacifiers (which I have done in the past) gave me a feeling that I wasn't quite capable of meeting all my baby's needs. Since having ditched the bottles and pacifiers, I feel more confident and relaxed and I also have a better milk supply than I have ever had with either of my babies. So to answer you question, yes she probably is using you as a pacifier. Only you can decide if you want to meet all her needs at your breast or introduce a pacifier to meet them. Don't let anyone tell you different and make you feel like you should supplement with formula - this happened to me with my first son (among other things) and I ended up weaning within a month because my milk dried up. My daughter, Haylee, (1/25/00) will do the same as your daughter - one day she'll do great then the next she practically stays attached all day! lol I think its a combination of things - yes, they do use them as pacifiers for comfort but they also will nurse more when they are going through a growth spurt. Sam (2/10/00) is at the breast alot, sometimes he eats with ferocity, sometimes he nibbles, sometimes he just likes to hang there. He also wets alot, and was also having a bm at every diaper change, but for the last two days seems to only have two bm's a day,(still wetting plenty tho). He is also passing lots of gas. It helps with things like teething and also offers an alternative to nursing non stop. I do have another question, she spits up a lot, is this normal for breasted babies, or is she having a reaction to something I am eating, my other 2 did not spit up at all, and she does a lot, and lots of it when she does. I don't think just because we have been doing something for a long time that it necessarily means that its productive or positive. I do think that many babies have a much higher need to suck than other babies. Letting a young baby suck on a washcloth soaked in water is the same as giving supplemental water which isn't recommended in the first 6 months. If a baby has a very high suck need I would first recommend letting the baby pacify at the breast, if this isn't possible than I would suggest a finger to suck on. This assures that the baby maintains a good suck (without getting nipple confusion) and also allows the baby the human closeness that is so necessary in the early months. Many babies spit up because the valve of their stomach is immature and will allow some liquid out when they burp. I wouldn't worry about it at all. Even if it was semi-digested it usually is nothing to worry about. It can be the sign of a food sensitivity is why I asked.
