Guest guest
Salli, I'm sure you're right about Putter knowing he doesn't feel well when he has milk, cheese, etc. quit drinking milk around age 3. Years later we found he's allergic to dairy protein. He can get away with cooked dairy though, like pizza with cheese. He even tried homemade macaroni and cheese recently and said he liked it. He only ate a small serving, but he had no ill affects. (See, another new food!) Sue

He can get away with cooked dairy Cooking a protein denatures it - breaks it down into smaller pieces. His body may not recognize the " broken " protein pieces as the same allergen as the whole dairy protein, or he may just be able to digest them more easily because the breakdown process has already been started for him. refused to drink formula as an infant. I think the first time we tried he was 3 months old. He would drink expressed breast milk from a bottle but not formula. When he was a year old I started trying to give him milk, and he would not drink it. He would eat ice cream but that was the only dairy product he would eat or drink. I would sneak cheese into his scrambled eggs and he would eat those but that was it. I think he was 14 months when we tried him on mac & cheese. He had some cheese sauce on his hand and touched his face, and his whole face swelled up so much his nose was pinched shut. Hives too. Benedryl & off to the ped's, which fortunately was open. Referred for allergy testing and lo and behold, severe dairy allergy. They did the skin scratch & that one swelled up to the size of a golf ball. He also reacted to beef and even cattle dander. The allergist was amazed that he reacted to all 3. Epi-pen in the diaper bag... I guess when we get our farm we'll have a goat instead of a cow. Now Gabe is turning into a little milk feind & doesn't want anything else to drink. But he loved goat milk when he was littler so that will work out. -Sara.
