From my understanding it is considered medical based on the problems that

occure with the excess skin such as rashes and infections. They don't see it as

cosmetic in that situation. You would have to talk to your doctor and insurance

company and have documentation that excess skin is causing issues to have it

covered. Not sure on all this, but this was my understanding.

For Kaiser in California, I have been told if you end

up with a hernia, Kaiser will cover the tummy tuck. I

have a friend who had the GBS and she has had the

tummy tuck....however, she has gained back almost half

her weight, has developed hypoglecimia, as she eats

candy when her blood sugar drops! I will be anxious

to tell her about CHEESE! We were working on Grad

Night for our oldest and the week she got back from

surgery in San Diego, she was eating cake, chips, etc.

I was so shocked and saw her dump a number of

times....it almost freaked me out to the point of not

wanting the surgery....however, I overcame my fear!!!

That is pretty much what I was told by Kaiser as well, right after they

told me to start saving my money for my surgery!

Some insurance companies will cover it if there are " hygeine " issues

and such. People have suggested documenting rashes, etc. every time

you get them. One woman called the doctor every time so she could get

some prescription cream for it. This she used as documentation. I'll

have to find the link, but she posted the letters she wrote that got

hers approved.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons have a document on their

website recommending insurance coverage criteria for the removal of

skin following massive weight loss. It might have some information to

use when dealing with the insurance company. Basically, they

differentiate between when skin removal is " cosmetic " and when it is

considered " reconstructive " .

I don't know if mine covers it, but I've already started thinking

about it. I think a tummy tuck can be had for about $3500 if you're

lucky. I'll probably start saving now just in case.

I had such trouble with skin irriations before

surgery, but since surgery, my blood sugar is under

control and no more irritations...isn't that just

peachy? I still have this pink inner tube under my

belly button...arrrrrrrrrrrgh!!!

I am starting to feel good. The first week was a challange and I am not a wimp.

My bladder decided not to work after the general anesthesia and I had a cath for

about a week then developed a major UTI. Now that thats fixed.... I am great.

The pain was not an issue for me. I took some pain meds the first couple of

days but I really did not need them after that. If my bladder had worked this

would have been a breeze. I am still very pleased and do not regret it. There

is a great website called Tuck that Tummy and they have a great messageboard.

It has been a great source of info. Lori

Debi,

Don't blame you.... I don't see how anybody in their right mind would

sabotage themselves after risking so much!!! I mean, we do risk our very

lives to get this surgery which most likely will lenghten and enrich our

lives only to turn around and cheat and gain it all right back...?? Don't

make sense to me. Maybe I'm just " not there " yet? So far (I've only had my

surgery Aug 22) I am happy I am eating so little. It gives me a sense of

accomplishment. I am proud of myself. I control food. Food no longer

controls me. Does that make sense?? I know I won't be perfect for the rest

of my life and an occasional " forbidden " item will cross my lips eventually,

but no longer in the amounts I was used to. Maybe I'm still in the

" honeymoon " period, huh? LOL
