Thinking about surgery

Recently my friend had gastric bypass. As she was getting ready I

kept thinking that I should do it. But I would think wait until she

gets hers and see how she makes out. Well now that she has had it

done, I think its time for me. I need to loose about 120 lbs. Where

should I start. At my primary or go ahead and call a doctor that does

it. I am concerned about my insurance and other things, but I do

think it is right for me. Can anyone give me any advice about

starting the process? Thanks

I would check w/ your insurance & start w/ your primary care physician.

Most insurances will require a referral or documented dieting. Your pcp

should be able to help you.

I didn't even bother w/ my insurance. I knew I'd be self-pay so I went

right to the surgeon I wanted to use! Congrats on your decision!

I started by going to information sessions in my area. I went to 3 before

deciding to do this. The information sessions will give you some ideas of who

to talk to, such as insurance and PCP, and they will give you a chance to ask

questions.

Good question. My doc said no to the surgery, but I got the ball rolling

without him. I'm going to ask the surgeon's office if there are any docs they

can recommend that will approve the surgery. That might be a place to look if

you're familiar with a surgeon.

My doctor recommended that I see a nutritionist and when I called them to set up

an appointment, they were the ones who gave me a choice of surgery or diet. I

said surgery. My doctor was not happy and gave me a bit of a hard time, in the

end he supported me and now he wants me to be his poster girl...

Find another doctor. You're going to need all the support you can get!

I would start with your insurance and see what their requirements are. Then

I would call your primary care doctor and get a refural from them to see the

surgeon. You may have to have a psych evual, appointments with a dietician

and many other kinds of blood work and tests. It sometimes takes a while

and is a long process but it is worth it. The plus side is you have a

friend that has been through it and can help each other through it.
