Guest guest
Hello Barb, > This is for you longtimers on the list. We're moving into year three of chelation and looking toward some HBOT (along with finishing chelation) to wrap up his treatment. Our son is a good candidate for this, I believe, since he also has the CP. Makes sense to me. > Several years ago some lady with two autie kids kept posting about her amazing experience at this HBOT clinic in Florida (where she now works, I believe?.) Does anyone know HBOT clinics that cater to this? Yes, here is a great list of clinics: [mum's network homepage: http://www.netnet.net/mums/index.htm ] mum's list of HBOT providers: http://www.netnet.net/mums/hbolistAL-FL.htm [Alabama to Florida] http://www.netnet.net/mums/hbolistGA-WI.htm [Georgia to Wisconsin] http://www.netnet.net/mums/hbolistNon-US.htm [elsewhere in the world] From the main page of the Mum's Parent to Parent network, you can also find other info on HBOT, and other HBOT resources. In addition, MUMS has an HBOT packet they will send by mail for something like $25 mailing and copying fee. > > I checked around us and the local hospital-based HBOT clinics won't do autism or CP! OR car accidents or brain trauma patients???? Go figure! Yep, that sounds par for the course. There are --um-- a handful of " recognized " uses of HBOT. This means recognized by the mainstream. This does ***not*** include stroke, brain injury, or any of MANY other conditions which HBOT is very useful for. There are many freestanding (non hospital) clinics which will be more receptive. You may wish to note, however, that they will still need an Rx to provide this service to you. Many (or most? or all?) of them have a doctor on staff. The ones near my home that I've spoken to (2 of them) seem very receptive and helpful. Call around. Here is an email list you can join: hbotforcp/ Offhand I know of a mom w/an ASD child on the list, and also an adult w/CP, both using HBOT. I'm sure you'll find lots of help and support. There has been some fairly recent discussion/controversy there about the use of " mild " pressure HBOT chambers. (This can be ***relatively**** less expensive than the hard-shell chambers, if you are doing many treatments. Still NOT NOT NOT cheap.) You'll find several posts from me on the topic, if you are interested, as well as a post with comments on my use of a mild chamber (just once, considering whether to buy one). If you are interested in this, I can also provide you leads and information on pricing and various other considerations of that sort. Please let me know if there are other aspects that you are interested in. I may or may not be able to help, but I've been accumulating quite an assortment of information. The 3 therapies that I know of that I consider to be clearly useful for (some cases of) brain injuries are: 1. heavy metal detox 2. HBOT 3. cranial manipulation Medical ozone **may** also qualify. best, Moria
Guest guest
Here is another place you can look for HBOT clinics. http://hbomedtoday.com/dbsearch.html Enter a location (e.g. I used " california " to see how it works.) This database appears to list both hospitals and clinics--- and also some HBOT chambers that are used for research. I'm not sure if this is useful or not--- you'd have to sort through the results. Guest guest
> I've never heard of this before. Can someone explain what this does for > autistic children? Thanks! > Hello , I recently sent some HBOT links to a couple of people I know, so I'll copy them here for you. I don't know that they are the " best " links for info, but they are what I have. I'll also comment a bit for you on what it is or how it works==== about which I do know some---- however, I'd like to say up front that this therapy has not been used a lot with ASD kids ***as far as I'm aware***. There are SOME ASD kids who have been treated with it---- but I don't think this is common or widespread. For example, I don't believe DAN has any reference to it. Parents of kids with Cerebral Palsy have somewhat more use **apparently** (this is all based on my limited impressions). In any of these relms it is a WILDLY alternative therapy. HBOT = hyperbaric oxygen therapy. It combines breathing oxygen with higher-than-usual pressure. Both of these increase the uptake of oxygen into cells. The oxygen is what is (sometimes/often) healing. The pressure is created by a " chamber " . This is the same sort of thing that divers who have " the bends " use, and that mountain climbers who have altitude sickness use. There are some minor squabbles about how much pressure should be called " HBOT " . To get higher pressure you need a " hard shell " chamber. HBOT is ***expensive***. This may be its biggest drawback. It is also legally restricted (requires an Rx), and it is only generally recognized for a handful of its uses. [Aproximate cost: treatment in a hardshell chamber in the US: $100 to $200 per treatment. People usually do 40 treatments at a time, and often do more than one series of 40 treatments. treatment in UK: more like $20 to $30 per treatment (the MS society runs low cost clinics). Purchase of a lower pressure chamber for home use: $9000 to $20000 depending on size.] Since there are not a lot of HBOT centers around, many people actually travel to do this, staying in a hotel or whatever for weeks at a time. VERY inconvenient. There are also a few other types of healing methods which I think of along with HBOT, because they are all " oxygen therapies " . I have been reading about these (and to a minor degree experimenting with them) for about 5 years. The others are: ozone (used for healing) and hydrogen peroxide. And, yes, it took me a while to fathom how any of this could be healing. All of these are considered by some (including me) to help a very wide range of issues -- so much so that it can appear to be total rubbish and really really weird. This also involves various kinds of medical regulation and repression and correlary conspiracy theories. (I'm not sure about some of the conspiracy theories, but ozone is actually used in Germany pretty " normally " by MDs.... ) I mention this because I think you'll find a good deal of talk about it in many places where any of the oxygen therapies are discussed. My preferred book about oxygen therapies is OXYGEN HEALING THERAPIES by ial Altman. Not sure how much of this is about HBOT though. Okay--- here are links (with comments): oxytherapy website, includes hydrogen peroxide, ozone, HBOT: http://www.oxytherapy.com/ the FAQ there about HBOT (which I think is really not great): http://www.oxytherapy.com/faq/hbo.html The MUMS network info about HBOT: http://www.netnet.net/mums/index.htm http://www.netnet.net/mums/Whyhbo.htm They have the best list I know of of HBOT providers. See links on the index page (above). Tom Harrelson's links about oxygen therapies (skip down a bit to find the section on HBOT): http://healingtools.tripod.com/OT_pages.html This is probably very good, his stuff usually is. List about HBOT for parents of children with Cerebral Palsy: hbotforcp/ This is a VERY low volume list, but still of interest. website of OXYHEALTH, the primary distributor of MILD hyperbaric chambers: http://www.oxyhealth.com/ Mild chambers can only create about 1.3 atmospheres of pressure---- " hard shell " chambers go to higher amounts of pressure. This is a matter of some controversy. If you ever call oxyhealth, talk to Tom Melone, and tell him I sent you. Retail price on mild chamber is about $9500 for smallest one, and 2 larger sizes are 15000 and 20000 (approximate). Many other companies also resell these chambers. (I have looked for cheaper prices and can give you details if it is ever relevant.) http://www.hbot.com/frontpage.htm (just found this, it looks good) http://www.hbot4u.com/ This site has a collection of recovery stories. writes on some lists I read. One more caveat for you: Andy says that HBOT can be harmful to people who are mercury toxic. I've discussed this with him, and generally understand his reasons. You can ask him to discuss it too if you want. There is a theoretical part and a " practical observation " part (cases of actual people). In addition HBOT chambers do impose certain limits, concerns, and issues. I have been in a " mild " (low pressure) HBOT chamber once, for an hour, recently. I loved it and would love to have one. best wishes, Moria
