I had surgery on Sept 13. I was cleared to drive on 9/18. I was suppose to be in the hospital 2 days but experienced alot of nausea postop and was in for 4. I was not drinking and walking the way they wanted me to. As far as Disney goes, they want you walking as much as possible. Walk and enjoy it. I was driving a week and a half or so after surgery. I think I would have felt up to Disney after 7 weeks. But, each person heals & handles the surgery different. Also, how long were you all in the hospital? surgery on a wed. am and home on friday am how long before you could drive? i drove sat, day after i came home Do you think I'll feel up to going and walking that much? everyone heals differntly, i would have been more than fine to go to DW at that point and the walking will be great for u! Any pointers for what " to do " and " not to do " before/after the surgery? dont freak out, it is strange at first and many have buyers remorse the first few days, i did, but this is the most exciting adventure i have ever been on other than motherhood!!! Guest guest Posted September 24, 2006 Report Share Posted September 24, 2006 7 weeks after surgery, I think you will be able to handle the walking pretty good, I'm just not so sure about the riding of certain rides at Disney World.....that scares me as you WILL BE still HEALING inside and some shaking and jerking around like some rides do you.....I just don't know, I would definitely talk to your doctor about it, if he says ok, have a great time !!!!! At 7 weeks I was doing great, but I don't know if I could walk Disney right now and I'm only about 10 weeks out myself, and I like to walk and I do, but Disney is a big place to walk. Yes, I'd do it again, but I hope and pray I never have to. Also, how long were you all in the hospital? I was initially in the hospital for 4 days and then at home for 2 weeks. I got sick from pancreatitis and returned to the hospital for 2 weeks and then 2 week home recovery. And, how long before you could drive? You're not supposed to drive while on pain meds. So, if you are off of pain meds after 3 days, you can again drive, but if you're on pain meds for 2 weeks, you shouldn't be driving. And, yes, another question, we have a vacation to Disney World planned for Thanksgiving which will be a couple days shy of 7 weeks after the surgery. Do you think I'll feel up to going and walking that much? Provided you don't have any complications, you should be up to the walking by then. Make sure you stay hydrated and carry appropriate foods with you because you'll probably have a difficult time finding appropriate foods at the park. Any pointers for what " to do " and " not to do " before/after the surgery? Your doctor or nutritionist will provide you with their guidelines. I am 3 months out & down 61 lbs.I would do it again,no questions asked!In fact,I was in Wal mart tonight & a lady whose son went to pre - school with my son,whom I haven't saw since May,was yelling to me across the store,HEY SKINNY! It's things like that which makes it all worthwhile,not to mention I am 10 times better in health & spirit! I think you should be fine in 7 weeks to go to Disney because you are supposed to do alot of walking after surgery.They want you to be very active to get the weight off.At 7 wks post op,I went to the OZZFEST rock concert & did just fine.I already dropped 30 lbs so it made it that much easier to get around. Guest guest Posted September 25, 2006 Report Share Posted September 25, 2006 I had my surgery on a Weds., went home on a Friday, and the following Weds., we went camping (in an RV) and other than the poision oak I got on my ankle, I was fine. My only restriction from my surgeon was to not fly for the first three weeks, after that, we were good to go. Walk, walk, walk...oh, and sip, sip, sip!!! And....say " hi " to Mickey for me! That's what the surgeon did for me when I flew home from Mexico...8 days after surgery. That's the only worry w/ flying. Guest guest Posted September 26, 2006 Report Share Posted September 26, 2006 Hi everyone! I went to my dr. today for the final visit before my surgery this coming Monday. They asked that I bring the person who will be responsible for my post-op care with me. My husband took the day off and went with me. Although I had some blood work and a chest x-ray done the actual appt. with the dr. was more for my husband than for me. The dr. wanted to make sure that my husband knew there is a 1-2% mortality rate for the roux-en-y gastric bypass. I guess he won't perform the procedure until he gets the spouses verbal consent. I knew this information going in and had shared it with my husband. My husband is supportive and agrees with my decision to have the surgery. But it seems like since I was at the dr. and he talked about the whole mortality thing I can't get it out of my head! I am very excited about the surgery but am afraid that the closer it gets I'm going to start having second thoughts. I am 49 years old and weight 280. I have a daughter who is 13, a son who is 11 and a son who is 10. My 11 year old has type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent) and Celiac Disease (can't have anything with gluten in it...gluten is the second most common ingredient in food in the U.S.). I made the decision to have the surgery because I want to be around to take care of my kids...and I want to " live " life again...instead of just sitting on the sidelines...and get off the medication I take for high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, high cholesterol, and get rid of my stupid c-pap machine! How did you all focus on the positives that the surgery will enable vs. the ever so slight risk of not living through it? I'd appreciate words of wisdom from anyone...thanks! L. I know that there is a mortality issue here, but they way I think of it is this....Everything happens for a reason. If it's my time, then so be it. I'd rather take this risk to live longer and be healthier and grow old with my husband and watch my 11 yr old daughter get married. This is a risk I am willing to take. Besides, with only 2 deaths in my center, and they were not during the surgery, but after, I have confidence this is the right choice. I hope this helps you, good luck.
