Our New Year's Eve

I feel as I complain here lately and don't share much good news. We'll here

I go.

We have had constant company, meetings or appointments lately and this New

Year's Eve was going to be the same. My sister and her 12 year old twin boys, 7

year old daughter and her husband came up yesterday. Actually they are the

kindest, nicest people you could meet and came so Patty wouldn't be lonely.

The 12 year olds admire Patty tons, look at her to talk to her....

Anyway, we took them in to the city of Boston for " First Night " celebrations.

We planned on leaving by 8:30 to get home for the New Year. To make a long

story short we did a few things and then went to see the parade. We

accidentally went out a side door. Yes, they were following me and I get lost

all the

time! There we bumped into a school that was getting ready for the parade but

had 10 extra masks! These masks were huge painted cardboard body masks!

They asked us if we wanted to join them. We all asked Patty who said YES! The

only one who didn't have a mask was her. Each of us took a child and a,

who had on her mask, took Patty arm in arm. As we were waiting another woman

came up with a mask with huge holes for the eye area and asked Patty if she

wanted that one. Well, she took it put it on and gave me her cane. How brave

is that!

Off we went down the city street in the dark, with it starting to snow, with

drums, bands, noise and in the middle of thousands and thousands of people.

Kris kept her in the middle but Patty had tons of fun. She was waving to

people and dancing down the streets with her sister! And she did that the

entire

way. It must have been around a mile. I will never forget last night as long

as I live.

You must understand the only parade Patty was ever in was when she was 7 and

in brownness in our small hometown. It was only about 1/4 mile long and I had

to carry her on my shoulders the entire way. Now here she was dancing down

the streets of Boston yelling Happy New Year.

I had prayed for a sign that this would be a good year for her. Well, I

think I got that sign and then some. When we were done we had soda and snacks

with the entire parade and quickly went to the park. Miraculously the snow had

stopped and it had become clear to watch the fireworks. They were beautiful.

Off we went back to the train and then home again. We rang in the new year

safe and cozy at home.

I must say not only did I pray for a sign that Patty would have a good year,

I also thought of a (of course)! and all individuals who have CHARGE.

Maybe because I was thinking of so many people we got a huge, huge sign!

May everyone see the joy, hope and miracles that happen all the time.

Our year started by having us see it continues to happen even now that she's

an adult.

Happy New Year everyone!

Bonnie,

Thank you for sharing the story, I loved it and got " happy goosebumps "

imagining you all dancing down the streets of Boston in your masks. We've

talked about maybe coming down to Boston sometime for New Year's or Fourth of

July for fun; it's a fairly long drive for us, but Graeme is used to it as he's

down there 4-5 times every year making Christmas wreath deliveries. Anyway, I'm

glad you got a " sign " !

Bonnie-

What fun!!!! Thanks for sharing. How brave of you all to trek downtown for

such a huge event! I'm glad it turned out so well. I guess that school

group was a band of those angels we're always talking about.

We also had a great holiday and New Year's Eve. Aubrie had a small meltdown

when the little girls who were visiting wanted to go up to her room. She

must have been feeling protective about her space. She managed to recover

ok. Then she made it until midnight with the rest of us. First year our

group has all made it -- it's 2 other families with girls the same age. One

of the other girls had several meltdowns after about 11 or so. I think it

was tiredness. But at least it wasn't Aubrie!!

Give Patty a New Years hug from Aubrie and I.

These posts remind me of our Christmas. last year was the first time (!)

1) wasn't sick; 2) really was involved. Well, this year, she was the

first one downstairs and very interested in presents. Sometimes, it's

wonderful when things change. Martha

Pam: please let the Eliot staff know that fruitcake remains a hit.
