Kim,

That is a lot of pears. Won't he eat any other fruit? That's a lot of

carrots too. Will he not eat another veggie?

I really think you should consider using enzymes with each meal

and snack. Especially if he refuses to eat if you serve all cooked

foods, which would be much easier to digest.

I would eliminate the pork rinds. They provide no nutrition and

they are loaded with fat because that's what they are: fried pork

skin.

Kim........

I'd have to say that it's really too soon for the raw foods if he's still having

any stool issues at all....... and it sound like he is...... " they are light,

frequent, and HUGE. " , is how you described his BM's.... and you also said " He

does have undigested food in them

as well. " ...and... " He does, however, have a disteded belly. "

So, just based on these things, I'd say all the raw pears and carrots could be

causing him problems. I know you say that's the only way he'll eat them....

but.... well, I just gotta say, I don't know how you're going to progress.

Also... the pork rinds. We had another little boy on the list about a year ago,

who ate a LOT of pork rinds (and I'd consider a bag a day to be a LOT)... and he

continued to have problems... really never did progress much. He was self

limiting to pork rinds, bananas and like one other food, I think. I kept

suggesting to the mom that she just stop buying the pork rinds for him... but

she felt bad taking away one of the few things he liked. I understand.... but,

seriously, pork rinds have very little nutritional value and questionable

digestibility. I don't know, I just feel uncomfortable about how the kids do on

them, unless it's just a once in a while treat.

I just do not think you'll make headway on TRUE gut healing with these foods.

Eliminating the grains, starches and sugars in one thing, but these foods are

just too difficult to digest. Honestly, I know this is a dilemma but there may

be a way, if you feel his malabsorbtion problems are continuing/not improving...

we'll help you take a step back and figure out some ideas. If there is

inflammation going on in his gut, the food he takes in needs to be as easy to

digest as possible. Is everything else raw, too? The zucchini, pepper, &

cantaloupe?

I have to agree with Patti and Jody here. Sam wouldn't go near cooked

fruit either, but he did OK with bananas, pineapple jello and diluted

pineapple juice so I stuck with that until I thought he could handle

the raw. It *is* tough, but all signs say that your DS just isn't

ready for raw foods. The best and first thing to do its to get rid of

the pork rinds though, another toughie for you I'm sure! Jody's

advice to make up some cashew butter muffins, slice them and crisp

them up in a warm oven is the best idea I have heard for making some

crunchy SCD food!!! Can he tolerate nuts at all. Nut butters would be

OK to try now

Here are some tips for sneaking or making cooked fruit/veggies

palatable.....

Sneaky pancakes

Add cooked and pureed veggies to ground meat for burgers, meatloaf,

" spaghetti " sauce with tomato juice over spaghetti squash

Juice jello

Steam quarted pears and poke them with a wooden popscile stick, freeze

until hard

Or put pureed and diluted fruit in popscicle molds - these can be made

with any cooked, pureed fruit; pears, melon, mango, papaya....etc

Cold, steamed, baby carrots are sometimes better for kids with texture

issues.

Frozen banana on a popscicle stick?!?!

You may want to consider experimenting with reducing his supplements

at some point. Some moms find that after being on SCD for awhile,

their kids just don't need as much. Is he getting any probiotics at

all? The would help in gut healing tremendously.

Good luck!

Thanks for your suggestions about substitutions for raw fruit. unfortunately,

my son is severely allergic to all nuts so many of your suggestions will not

work. I know the pork rinds are not nutritional but they are his only FUN food.

a couple questions:

1)what is the least amount of time for me to cook/steam the carrots to make them

more digestable. i like your idea about putting them in the fridge after

they're cooked.

2)i have heard that yeast does not " like " pears so should i worry about taking

them out of his diet since he will not eat them cooked.

3) how do you use fruit to make jello?

THANKS, THANKS THANKS.

patti,

thanks for your detailed response. yes, the pork rinds do have to go and i'm

not as worried about that as i am about taking all his fruits and veggies out

because i'm left with only meat. he has a sever nut allergy so many of the

yummy recepies are out. I'm going to try to add his zucchini and green pepper

to his beef patty tonight. i'll let you know how it goes.

thanks again.

I'm not good with timing things....I'm one of those annoying cooks who

just throws things together LOL. I would let them steam until you can

stick a knife in them easily, but they aren't mushy.

I'd try to make the cooked popscicles before removing them all together.

I use diluted fruit juice. Sam is low salicylate so I use Dole 100%

pineapple juice. You could use the juice left over from cooking

pears, or juice pears if you have a juicer. Or any other SCD legal

juice - Welch's red or white grape, Tropicana OJ.... Knox gelatine is

SCD legal, I just follow the recipe on the box for Knox blox. If you

use pineapple juice, it comes out a nice yellow color; we call them

sponge bob square jello ;) We don't watch sponge bob (we don't have

cable) but man......he's everywhere!

Check out the recipes for sneaky pancakes, chicken cupcakes/pancakes

on pecanbread site and the chicken croquette recipe in BTVC; you can

easily hide cooked carrots, green beans and zuccini in any of these.

hi chrystee,

thanks for answering my questions.

i felt like a hero tonight pureeing charlee's zucchini and putting it in his

burger....and he ate it!!!!

charlee works for his carrots at school so i need to find a substitute non-meat

type food.

thanks again.

Kim.... have you tried the butternut squash fries? Or the carrot chips? Many of

the kids really like them.

<<2)i have heard that yeast does not " like " pears so should i worry about taking

Just try to remember that a really damaged gut does not " like " raw fruit. :)

It's just soooo much harder to digest and the whole idea of SCD, especially in

the beginning is to make every thing as easy as possible to digest.

I'm glad to hear you got him to accept the pureed veggies in his burger! :)

Hi Kim,

> 1)what is the least amount of time for me to cook/steam the

carrots to make them more digestable. i like your idea about

putting them in the fridge after they're cooked.

It is hard to say a time because of different heating methods etc.

If they are fork-tender (fork or knife cuts can be inserted easily)

that's good.

> 2)i have heard that yeast does not " like " pears so should i worry

about taking them out of his diet since he will not eat them cooked.

Along SCD, it is more that food that the body can not digest is left

to the microbes to digest. So, if he can't digest raw fruits or

veggies yet, then it is feeding the bacteria and yeast. Have you

tried freezing cooked pears as ice cream or popsicles? Another

option is to cook the pears like the carrots until fork tender and

before they get mushy freeze it in slices. My kids love large

slices or chunks of frozen fruit. They can't really tell if it is

cooked when frozen.

> 3) how do you use fruit to make jello?

Follow the directions on the gelatin packages substituting legal

juices for other liquids. Make sure that it is still diluted. You

could incorporate cooked fruit into the jello but it depends on the

child if they will eat fruit in SCD jello.
