Guest guest
Hi, My son has been SCD for 5 weeks now...we are running into a little problem He starts SK in 2 days. The school has told me that they are totally nut free due to allergies. This did not pose a problem when he was GFCF but now Ive got a dilemma. The school allows parents to bring in cupcakes, special sugary snacks for children's birthdays and they have a monthly popcorn day...big event.. On regular days I can come up with good snack foods and have gotten lots of suggestions already from this list (thanks Moms!). However, my son is very aware of what goes on around him and I suspect is beginning to feel he is a little bit different. How do I handle those days? I cannot come up with a cookie or cupcake that is nut free! We have been fanatic about the diet to date. The only illegals hes had were due to my learning curve (wrong brand of juice, that sort of thing). Have other parents experienced this and how did you handle it? Part of me wants to allow him at least a taste, so he feels part of the group...the other part of me is afraid of how this may impact the work to date. Another question. Day 3 on the diet we saw regression, bad for a few days then things seems to be on the upswing behaviourally and cognitively. Yesterday he woke up and had the worst regression Ive seen him have in probably a year, very little eye contact, little communication, echolalia, etc. Seems better today..more focus but still lots of nonsense talk ..there were no diet illegals and no changes I could see. I have to admit it was scary and discouraging. Any comments or ideas? We are hanging in, in part to this great support! e, mom of 4 yrs, 11 mos, ASD, SCD, 5 weeks _____ <http://promos.hotbar.com/promos/promodll.dll?RunPromo & El= & SG= & RAND=5661 7 & partner=fastutility> Block Spam Emails - Click here! Guest guest
I don't know what to say about the nut issue... Is there anybody at the school with a documented allergy? If there is a kid who has a documented nut allergy, find out if macadamia, or cashew or hazelnuts are OK. Some kids are allergic to peanuts, but to other nuts it is not so common. Do you have a " doctor's note " regarding your own son's dietary restrictions? My guess is that if this is a public school, or your son has an IEP, that you bring the issue up in an IEP meeting. Bring information on how the SCD diet works and educate them in his dietary needs. And they will have to go by what is aggreed and " written in the IEP " . Get the Supertintendent involved if you have to. They may suggest a different classroom/school. Parties are social events that our children NEED TO PARTICIPATE to meet their social needs. If there is a " no-nut " and your son could not have another type of cupcake, maybe there should be a " no- cupcake " policy, and have parties with grapes, pineapple, and applesauce!!! As for the regression... I guess it could be die-off. If you keep a food diary, check what he ate in the last few days!!! Coral

T Try Herb's Bean Pancakes page 126 BTVC, leave out the onions and add vanilla and cinnamon. Spread with homemade jam and make a jelly roll. Make Diva's Fudge from the Pecanbread (leave out any nuts) website or fruit leathers. make meringues and use a little beet juice to color them pink. Use little boxes or foil with stickers and ribbons to make the treats look special. Carol F.
Guest guest
Hi e, > How do I handle those days? For my kids school lunches (nut free also) I have made the marshmallow recipe at http://www.pecanbread.com/recipes.html . Instead of coating with nuts, I dehydrated some cooked carrot and squash. When cooked, I mashed it and spread it thin until dry. Allow to cool to room temperature and grind into a powder with a coffee grinder (or blender/food processor). > Part of me wants to allow him at least a taste, so he feels part of the > group...the other part of me is afraid of how this may impact the work > to date. There are many kids these days with different sensitivities, allergies so it is far less common. Having illegals this early after starting SCD will undoubtly impact in some manner. > Another question.
