autism circa 1982-SCARY!!!

so we've all heard the bullshit that use to be spouted about autism. how

mothers brought this upon their children - " refrigerater mother syndrome "

and all that shite. of course this was a few decades back when children

like ours were removed from their homes and institutionalized, medicated

rather than educated and generally described as insane. well, hearing this

stuff is one thing but i saw it in black and white the other night. holy

crap!!

i had taken sebastian to see the psycholgist who is evaluating him. while i

waited in another room, i leafed through some old psychology text books

where i read some horrifying stuff. this one that was published in 1982

(which isn't that freaking long ago!) suggested that autism was a result of

parenting failure. apparently, autistic children, by and large, have

mothers who fed too much information into their childs left brain and

fathers who didn't spend enough time engaging in gross motor activities with

their children. can you freaking believe this?? i was stunned. had we

read this in 1982 as our child was being diagnosed we would have completely

bought it, afterall it sounds applicable to paul and i as parents, and been

eternally devastated and guilty for what we had done. isn't this

frightening to think!!

Yeah, I could be described that way...

And Lou too. So we might have believed it except that Lou would already

have known it was all my fault.

i had taken sebastian to see the psycholgist who is evaluating him. while i

waited in another room, i leafed through some old psychology text books

where i read some horrifying stuff. this one that was published in 1982

(which isn't that freaking long ago!) suggested that autism was a result of

parenting failure.

<<<<<<<<

My son was BORN in 1982. Can you imagine if *I* would have had issues with

him??????

It's no wonder when he was little, I ignored the requests for having him

tested for ADHD.

Your psychologist needs to update his reading material.

That junk needs to be trashed.
