Maybe he didn't narrow the intestin that leaves the stomach enough??,

which if it wasen't narrowed enough would make the food empty more

quickly and make you feel hungry more often. So, What if he went in to

narrow it a little more??? Also the placement of the leaveing intestin.

Maybe when he was putting it back on he did it to low??

I have heard of several who's pouch has remained the same but the stoma

where the food exits stretches so that literally food is passing right

through them.

I myself have an appt next week if I can make it (depends on dh is in town

or not) to talk to Dr. Thayer about this very same thing.

pam,

those are all possibilities. you would think those types of things could be

corrected with another surgery using sutures instead of a band. i need to

talk to him to find out if that is possible. i think with a little

tweaking, this procedure could work wonders for me.

thanks for the support,

DEAR MARY AND CHRISTINA

ALL I HAVE TO SAY MARY IS I HOPE YOU ARE NOT GOING BACK TO THE SURGEON WHO DID THE RNY THAT GAVE YOU THESE PROBLEMS. PLEASE CHECK IT OUT WITH ANOTHER SURGEON. ITS LIKE GOING TO A PLASTIC SURGEON AND HE DIDN'T DO THE SURGERY RIGHT AND YOU GO BACK TO THE SAME PLASTIC SURGEON TO DO THE CORRECTION. GIVE ME A BREAK.

this is just a consult with Dr. Thayer to tell him what I think is

going on with me. I'm hoping after that visit I'll leave with an order for

an upper gi.

anyone else out there thinks or knows they have this situation, or if anyone

knows of someone who had a revision to correct the problem, i would love as

much information as possible.

That’s very interesting. I have my one year post-op visit next week.

Do you think I should mention to Dr. Thayer the fact that I haven’t lost

any weight in 7 months?

"good" and that is why i have managed to not put on any weight, i just

can't lose. at first, everything was fine and then i hit what i thought

was a plateau. after 2 months, i talked to dr thayer about it and

he ordered the upper gi. i saw for myself on the screen that the

stoma is pretty much the size of the pouch and immediately as the food

enters my stomach it comes right out. if

any of us were able to "diet" i don't think we would have had to have this

surgery. i am so happy that i lost 65lbs. but i have 140 to go.

tomorrow is the 1 year anniversary of my surgery. i really thought

by now i would be down at least 100 lbs. and maybe close to goal. thanks

hi alice,

sorry to hear that you have been having trouble losing weight too. it's very upsetting when you hear all the big numbers and you aren't losing anything! i keep blaming myself, which doesn't help the "dieting", but i'm starting to hear about more people in the same boat. lyssa was nice enough to give me her appmt slot for wednesday because she won't be able to make it. so i'll be talking to dr thayer then to see if there are any solutions.

were you able to lose all/most of your weight in the beginning and now feel you can eat more. i still have a long way to go... i think it's important for dr. thayer to see that not everyone is sailing through this. i'd love for you to post to the group after you've met with him.

thanks,

mary

I did find that I lost 80% of my weight in that first 6 months. Although

I’d love to lose another 10#, I’m quite happy with how I look at 153#.

I’m just afraid of it creeping back on, but so far, so good. I can certainly

eat much more now than I could at the beginning, but I think that’s normal.

Still, I get nervous when I can eat an entire sandwich and a small bag

of baked chips for lunch. Some days I can eat a ton, but others I can’t.

So, I’m thinking that this is normal, and maybe nothing’s wrong with my

pouch. I’ll discuss it with the doc and let you all know what he says.

Stuff happens.

I will share about years 3-5 for me. I started grazing innocently on fat free pretzels. Over a few months it wasn't long before I was going through a large bag every 2 days. then the sugar snuck back in. Just a taste mind you but over a period of time my dumping grew milder cuz of the tolerance build up. Then the cabinet cruising really started and I was back to the old habits I had before surgery. Guess what. Those that forget the past are doomed to repeat it. I almost did. I regained 64lbs over that 2 years. I denied the scale, was eating anything I wanted without question, in a lesser amount at one sitting which is why I did not gain all of the weight back. I was scared, embarrassed and sure I was gonna fail the surgery. I finally gave up fighting the food. I could not do it. I went back to exercise. I stopped grazing, my meals have a beginning and an end. I gave up soda, an old binge food for me. Then I decided I needed to try something new. I decided to give up carbs. I found that when I ate cereal or bagels or toast for breakfast the cravings came in all day and by 2:30 I could eat the walls. As soon as I stopped the starches the cravings went away. I started eating 6 times a day to get enough in and to give myself permission to have a snack. So, to finally finish the turn around I devised a simple way of living daily:

1. Eat 6 times a day

2. Drink 80+ounces of water daily

3. Eat protein first then veggies

4. do not drink with meals

5. do not drink carbonated beverages

6. exercise

7 take all supplements

When I started doing this the weight came off plus more.

I am now at the lowest weight I have ever been. I am at the smallest size.

So, assuming there is nothing medically wrong, I have never been scoped, I have to take responsibility for what I am doing. I had to stop blaming my surgery, (Gee, I am only 50 cms bypassed, why wasn't I 120 cms bypassed like others), and my usual " it's his fault, he brings in the junk food " .

Again I stress, I am assuming I have nothing medically wrong. I do believe I " stretched " my pouch a bit but that's the same thing as " stretching " the stomach when we overeat. No such thing, the stomach doesn't stretch, it only inflates and when emptied out it seems like it was stretched because you feel hungrier. this is why I don't drink soda.

Anyway, JMHE.

i'm glad you were able to find a way of life that works for you. it sounds like you've got it down. like i said, i knew going in that over time the food intake was going to increase but i'm talking about 4 months here and i'm not talking about gaining weight, i'm just not losing. i am not binge eating like i was before surgery. being a vegetarian, protein is another issue. but i've upped my water intake. i am not trying to blame the surgery. i had this surgery because if i don't lose this weight, i'll die, one way or another. i am not perfect, but i just want people to know that this can happen and has. the so called "stretching" of the stoma is why they do banding. i don't want to make a huge issue of this, but i thought i could get some support here. i think everyone in this group has had a few issues with food and can relate to the viscous cycle that can happen when we feel bad. you think?

I agree with you. Mind you I did stress that there is an assumption that there is no medical reason for the weight stagnation or weight gain. I do know several people who needed to get the stoma decreased in size due to stretching. My surgeon said the common thread of all of these was diet soda because the carbonation warms up in the pouch and the gas expands as it warms. Just a thought here.

And BTW, you do have support here. This is why we all are here, to share our experiences and reach out others.

Hugs.

Rita:

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. I am coming up on my one year anniversary. Like you, I am 5'-8" and right now I weigh 210 lbs (down from 345 at time of surgery).

My biggest fear is that I will go back to the old eating habits and, as time goes by and more types and quantity of foods can be tolerated, the weight will return. I read with interest your 7 daily steps and except for the water, I pretty much follow them. I get about 60 oz. per day, but that's seems to be the most I can do.

I still eat 6 times a day (if hungry, if not, I skip a snack) and exercise faithfully. Still, I am worried sick that the weight will return. After all, it always has in the past. Your experiences prove that yes, the weight can and will return if we get careless, but with some effort on our part, the weight can stay off.

After all, this surgery is only a tool not a miracle cure for obesity, so I guess we should all expect to have to work at keeping at a healthy weight for the rest of our lives.

Thanks again for sharing!!

Thanks, Rita. I will try to get in more water. I pray for a faster weight loss. You get depressed because of all the people who say they lose sometimes 5 to 6 lbs a week. I don't even get that in a month!

Re: my story...

Hi ,

I feel that I am able to eat more than I should. Or at least get hungry more often than I should. I would love to hear from others who have been successful in their weight loss what they eat during the course of a day. I figure that I must be doing something wrong. But there are times when certain things I can eat more of and certain things I can't. Let's hear from all you successes out there! What do you eat during the day!!!
