Guest guest
For us, it's the repeating of things that were just said. For example, if I say " go get your shoes on " , my son usually runs to his room chanting " go get shoes on, go get shoes on, etc " It used to be that this was the extent of his verbalization, but now he does communicate and speak his mind. He also does still have echolalia though. He will repeat things he hears around him whether it be things off TV, out of our mouths or even animal sounds. It's a really common " feature " of autism. Hope that helps! I know the " definition " but that doesn't help me understand what it's really like. I don't know if I see it or not. Thanks. Other variants (as it is going away) -Mom: What do you want to eat? -Kid: What do you want to eat bread. -Mom: Who is that? -Kid: Who is that July Later on, as it is disapearing... -Mom: What's your name? -Kid: Name -Mom: Get your shoes, we are going to play outside -Kid: Outside Echolalia used to be " corrected " through therapy, but I believe that now it is encouraged, as it is another form of communication (it is actually thinking out loud, a strategy for those kids with auditory processing disorders!) For my son, as he started to develop better auditory processing the chunk of speech that he repeated got shorter and shorter.
