Hi na-

I want to welcome you to the list! I applaud your decision to breastfeed!

My name is and I'm a happily married SAHM to 3 kids. 7,

5, and Katelyn 21 mo. I didn't nurse my first, I nursed Josh for 10

months, and I'm still nursing Katelyn. Breastfeeding didn't come easy for

me, just like many other moms who have faced challenges, but the rewards have

been abundant.

I have to tell you though, your Doctor is wrong about supplementing him

with formula for jaundice. The list owner Wendi will be better prepared to

medically tell you why this is so, but breastmilk is the best course of

action for jaundice. My last 2 both had jaundice, even had to be treated

with phototherapy, but you produce the perfect food for your baby, please

don't supplement!! You might not even last just 6 wks if you start

supplementing now. It's very important to have an adequate milk supply to

feed him every feeding from the breast! I know some other women on this list

have had major problems when it comes to supplementing! I just want you and

your little one to have the best chance of a nursing relationship of whatever

length. Keep in touch-

Welcome na! Lots of great advice here and a few working moms who bf as

well.

I would really question the DR's orders about supplementing because of jaundice,

it probably isn't necessary, Dr.'s know diddly squat about bfing. Someone else

here (?) would know more.

I am Michele, 29 y/o SAHM (sometimes WAHM) of 2 with another due in 5 weeks, I

am still bfing #2 so I'll be tandem nursing for a bit pretty soon. We are in

Edmonton Alberta. You can read my bfing story online, there is a link from my

homepage.

Hello,

I am new to the list and thought I would introduce myself. My name is na,

I am 23 and live in Chesapeake, Virginia. My husband, Nick, is in the Navy, and

we are both from Los Angeles, California. I work

at a publishing company full-time, and have not yet decided if I will continue

breastfeeding after I return from maternity leave. Our first son was born on

Jaunary 27th (I can't believe it was only 13 days

ago!) and I have decided to breastfeed for at least the first 6 weeks. Right

now I am supplementing with formula - doctor's orders, due to little ph's

jaundice. Well, that's about all from me for now, I

look forward to being a part of this list!

Hi Michele!

Nice to meet you. I wasn't happy to hear about the formula either,

however being the amateur mom I am, I am doing it mainly because " the

doctor said so. " It's only SUPPOSED to be for 48 hours... and

THANKFULLY he prefers my breast to the bottle. Some feedings he doesn't

even WANT the formula, so I don't push it, I just pour it down the

drain. I really hate the bottle too, ph never spit up before, and

now when I hear that little cough he does it just breaks my heart. But I

keep telling myself, only one more day... and I find myself feeding him

more often now as my breasts start to ache. And he's always very eager

to eat! He's only 2 weeks old, and although breastfeeding is very

tiresome for me, I wouldn't pass it up for the world. I guess it's the

closeness? Well whatever it is, I love it!

That is wonderful that he is an eager nurser since so many jaundiced babies

are sleepy : ) You think breastfeeding is nice now? Wait a few months when

it is so easy and such a joy. Seriously there is nothing like the

breastfeeding relationship.Enjoy!

Ya, that's why bfing my first didn't work, the nurses and dr told me he was just

one of those baby's that wouldn't bf and I believed them. He was very tired

from the Demerol I had in my labor and he wouldn't latch. I know a lot more

now!

(S),

Well with me being the first time mom, I automatically did doctor says, patient

does! He said to do it for 48 hours, so what I am doing is feeding him as I

normally would (about 10 minutes each breast) and then offering him the bottle.

Sometimes he takes it, sometimes he doesn't. Either way I don't force it. If he

won't drink it, I just pour it down the drain.

na,

I am also a first time mom and my ds had jaundice.

They admitted him to the NICU and told me that since

my milk hadn't come in I needed to supplement with

formula. They said this would make him better faster

so I did it. I would nurse him and then offer the

bottle. We did this only a couple times and then my

milk came in and I stopped supplementing. My ds did

not have any problems with nipple confusion. He

continued breastfeeding. He is now almost 6 months old

and doing great.

Right now I am supplementing with formula - doctor's > orders, due to little

Hi Suzanna:

The 'medical' reasoning is this:

Jaundice is the livers inability to process something called " biliruben

(sp) " Breastmilk is the most easily processed food available to babies. The

breastmilk going through the liver flushes out the biliruben much quicker

than formula does since it takes the body longer to process formula. That

said, some doctors falsely believe that breastmilk causes jaundice. For more

info check this page out:

http://www.lalecheleague.org/NB/NBJanFeb93.html

Good for you not forcing the bottle though! It's a common problem with

bottles that babies tend to over feed and moms tend to try to get the bottle

finished (so as not to waste it!) had jaundice when he was born and it

was gone in a few days :) Remember also to try to get your baby into

indirect sunlight frequently to help the jaundice as well!

Welcome to the list! I hope you find some great support her (as I and many

others have!)

<<I work at a publishing company full-time, and have not yet decided if I

will continue breastfeeding after I return from maternity leave. >>

How long is your maternity leave? Pumping at work can be very easy so that

your baby can have the best even when you aren't there! If you need more

info, just ask! :)

na,

welcome to the list. Congratulations on your new baby and on your decision

to nurse at all. It sure is great for your baby. I had to deal with

jaundice and it can be scary. I have an article on my website written by a

physician that you might want to read.

na,

I would highly suggest getting a double electric to keep up and maintain

your supply. If you plan to pump and work it is best to have a really good

pump otherwise it really is an uphill struggle. It is worth the extra

money, just think what you would spend in formula for the first year.

My maternity leave is 6 weeks long, of which I have about 4 weeks left. I

wish I

could take longer, however my leave is unpaid, and we really need to be a

two

income household. My husband is in the military, and let's just say we can't

support a family on his income. I am very interested in pumping, in fact we

are

going to buy a pump tonight. We are looking at the Medela single pump... any

thoughts or suggestions?

Sounds like you are very fortunate. I am glad to hear that it's going well.

Do you feel you have support from friends/family in your decision to bfd?

What made you decide to bfd?

good for the skin but it's the only thing that removes all my makeup.

Soooooooo- there you go. Hope this has helped you.

Kathy-

When in June are you having your surgery? Mine is June 29 at the Beth Israel. :-)

Also, just an FYI for you...I have started a OSSG list for patients of the Beth Israel. By no means am I trying to steal the thunder from this list...this list is the balls!!! (oops! Did I type that???)...but the Beth Israel had no email group, and they're going through a little turmoil as to their support group meetings, so I made a list. It's still in it's infancy stages, but the word is slow getting out to all of the patients. Anyway, if you care to join, it's on , and it's OSSG-BethIsraelDeaconess.

Happy Mothers Day to all the moms.
