Guest guest
Hi , I am 42, a little younger than you. I have had no real complications from my surgery. I have lost 67lbs in 4.5 months, feel and look great. Have more energy and a sense of well being which I have not had in years. I do not regret my decision for surgery for a second. Guest guest
Dear , my name is Ellen. I am 39 years old and had an open RNY last August. I guess I was meant to read your post because I have had a rough journey since last August. I was sick in the hospital, but had one great surgeon, three months out I had excruciating lower right quadrant pain and ended up with kidney stones. At that time they checked my gallbladder and it was as clean as a whistle. Last week the excruciating pain began in my stomach and back pain and ended up back in the hospital again with an open chole. I had to have my gall bladder removed and have an open incision..I am a single parent without a large support system so it was not easy.WOULD I DO IT AGAIN? In a heartbeat. Since last August I lost 160 lbs. I can bend over to tie my shoes..my right hip no longer hurts. my cholesterol dropped 70 points and other than my recent surgery I am relatively pain free. I am unable to eat concentrated sweets and high fat foods which is a blessing. It leaves me to free up my mind to use for more important things...I have a dear old lifelong friend who asked me for the first time yesterday if I think she should have the surgery and I told her only she has the answer to the question. She is in a similar situation that I was in. We both work in the medical field and our weights topped out over 300lbs. no matter how hard to try to over compensate for being overweight in the workforce it is not appreciated...I told her to look at all of the pro's and con's to surgery.and she will receive her own answer . Sometimes we don't like the answer. there are always three answers . YES, NO AND WAIT. Good LUCK!
Guest guest
I am 46 and just 2plus months out. I have few complications, these include some diarrhea and temporary numbness in my thighs. I feel so much better already. I have more energy than I have had in years. If I were to die tomorrow, I would be grateful for this time that I have felt alive and active. It IS worth it, but it is a huge decision. Good Luck
Guest guest
: I am exactly your age ( I was just past my 51st B-day when I had the surgery). Dr. Thayer always calls me one of his "older ladies", but I can't begin to explain what a difference this surgery has made in my life. Fortunately, I was in good health going into the surgery so had no complicating conditions (except for moderately high blood pressure). The surgery and recovery were pretty much uneventful, although I will say it probably took a good 6 to 8 weeks before I really started to see my energy return. Since then, though, my energy has increased dramatically and I feel better than I have in years. I was 345 lbs. post-op and about 11 months later, I am down 134 lbs. Not too shabby for an "older lady". I walk/run 10 miles a week and do weights (just at home; don't belong to a gym, yet). Yesterday (Saturday) for example, I was up at 6:30 am, walked the dog, went food shopping, did 2-1/2 miles on the treadmill, sorted through spring and summer clothers in anticipation of an upcoming trip to Floriday in May, fixed lunch, went to South Shore Plaza for a little clothes shopping (NOT the plus size departments!) because I discovered I have no Floriday clothing, went out to dinner with hubby, visited my aunt in the hospital and went to Walmart. Admittedly, by 10:00 pm I was bushed and hit the sack, but that is more activity in one day than I used to be able to do in a whole weekend. In fact, sometimes if I am not active enough, I have a lot of restless energy and get really bored around the house (the winter is tough) and I have to just get up and move and do something, even if it's just organizing bills or working on a jigsaw puzzle. Gone are the days when I can just sit in front of the TV and do nothing else (and I don't miss those days one bit!). Of course I can only speak for my own experience since surgery. It is, after all, major surgery, with all its risks and potential complications. But I think, all in all, it is well worth having and in general the outcomes are favorable. If you are having doubts, talk to the doctor and this group. I know there are people in the group who have had their share of post-op problems, but I would bet most of them would still do it again. Keep us posted and good luck with your journey. Lois

Guest guest
Hi Everyone, It's been a while, but I have been reading all of your messages. I have been a bit discouraged on my weight loss. I started at 288 and am now at 251. My surgery was on 1/30/01. I just can't seem to drop the weight. I can't excercise too much as I have a ciatic problem with extreme pain down my leg. I eat for breakfast either 1/2 english muffin w/ peanut butter or w/pb & Polaner or I'll have an eggbeater omelet. For lunch I either have tuna & cottage cheese or a smart ones tv dinner. At night I'll eat protein/veg. For snacks I have a cheese stick with two squares fat free saltine (2X a day). At night I will have a smart ones no sugar added fudgecicle. Am I doing something wrong? My weight seems to stay the same until about 3-4 wks go by and then I'll drop 2 lbs or something. Please help!!!!!!!
