Guest guest
It was a real disappointment to watch Weekend Housecall this morning with Dr. Gupta and Holmes. Dr. Gupta presented Mr. Holmes as the Autism Society Association but it is not until the last 5 minutes of the program that Mr. Holmes corrects Dr. Gupta that he serves on an advisory board to ASA. There were tons of commericals and the questions that were e-mailed in and those taken by phone were picked very selectively. The only question that Mr. Holmes answered correctly in my vote was about ABA - it is effective and supported by the research and is expensive. It was a little amusing to see Dr. Gupta's eyes bug-out at how much treatment is and by Mr. Holmes' comment that this is the real crime. Obviously, Dr. Gupta did not do his research. Mr. Holmes alleged that autism was caused by NEW CAR SMELL in automobiles. This was stated 4 times. Dr. Gupta said vaccines were not the cause which was stated 3 times; however, both told parents not to get vaccines that contained thimerosal - is this an oxymoron or what??? They both stated that there was no research supporting the vaccines connection - obviously again, no one is doing their homework - we have the work of Drs. Pendergrass, Haley, Grier, Bradstreet and then there is at least 300 doctors in this country who believe in the vaccine connection. Mr. Holmes mentioned the Newsweek article and said it will be talked about for months. Dr. Gupta showed a clip of the a CDC spokeswoman about autism rates where she stated that it was not epidemic. Guest guest
Gupta - was it Dr. Sudhir Gupta or somebody else? About new cars smell - could be something reasonable in it? May be, the new cars are deodorized with some harmful chemical, or it was just something against car industry? Does anybody know? Did they explain it somehow? My son with autism was born in 1999, and we bought 2 new cars in 2000. Margaret > It was a real disappointment to watch Weekend Housecall this morning with Dr. > Gupta and Holmes. Guest guest
Well, I can blow his theory out of the water. At 32 yrs old I've never owned a new car and probably never will. My kids wouldn't know a new car smell from doggy poo. Although, they would know doggy poo, lol. I thought the CNN thing was a joke, but at least autism was in the news again. Guest guest
--In some people, new car smell can help a person develop autism by contributing to the already toxic overload. New cars, expecially the vinyls, exude phenols and other toxins into the air, which our children breathe. I can't get 10' of a new car......because of the chemical fumes coming out of them. I can't tolerate a car less than 3-4 years old, because of the mixture of chemicals gassing off. Guest guest
Sorry its more crap[scapegoating ] the REAL cause. I NEVER BOUGHT a new car . Guest guest
I think it is unfortunate that HOlmes only gave THAT new car issue as an example... I think he should have discussed neuro-toxins in general and given a list of examples instead of just that one, because obviously it is being taken too literally. The same can be said about carpeting in workplaces, off-gassing from particle board furniture-- for pete's sake-- my office got a new phone system and telephones and I swear that stupid phone was poisoning me in my office. It REEKED of a strong plastic chemical smell and when I had to take a call, it was making me woozy. Anyway, I'm not defending Holmes, just saying that I understand the point he was trying to make... lots of us are being affected by chemicals, however, if we didn't have the mercury burden, we'd probably be better able to deal with chemical exposures than what we are right now. I also am a bit disapointed that he advised parents to ask for the mmr without mercury-- to my knowledge, it NEVER contained mercury right? So it makes him lose a little credibility... maybe he meant to say give it away from any OTHER shots that might contain mercury, but I don't know--the transcript doesn't really tell it that way. Guest guest
Maybe now the automobile industry will retaliate by supporting real research into the damage that thimerosal and/or the MMR vaccine has done to our children. They don't want people to stop buying new cars b/c they're afraid they cause autism (especially if they're going to be blamed for the 400-800% rise in Autism rates in the last 10-20 years)! That can't be good for the new car business! [ ] Re: CNN, a real disappointment > Gupta - was it Dr. Sudhir Gupta or somebody else? > About new cars smell - could be something reasonable in it? Guest guest
A lot of new cars were also sprayed with a fabric protectant just prior to you taking them out of the showroom. So think about that-- a barely dry chemical freshly sprayed all over the upholstery and carpet in your car, then you drive it out within about an hour of them doing this. It was usually an add-on fee that you had to elect to have done to your car, but I suppose it's possible that they sprayed this regardless of whether or not you paid for it. It either was, or was similar to, Scotchguard, which has had a lot of problems associated with it. Yes, we got a new car while I was pregnant with Ethan, and got another new car when he was a couple of months old. But, I also was a clean fiend back then too and used to use all kinds of nasty cleaners in the house, and even after he was born I would clean the bathroom and house and use orange-oil on all the furniture on a WEEKLY basis. (Was I out of my mind or what?? What I can't get over is how much ENERGY I used to have as compared to now, 7 years later). Anyway, whether it's new cars, or the stuff they spray on the furniture, or polyester clothing, carpet cleaners, etc. there's a lot of stuff that could have affected our children.
