You'll still get the backhanded comments after surgery! It never ends!

" You look so good now. " I didn't look good before? LOL

Oh come on. I get those " kind words " with having shaved off my beard,

getting a hair cut or wearing a new shirt. Don't read so much into

that crap. People are just trying to make conversation albeit rather

clumsly.

Ask yourself, too, did you have WLS for others? Major surgery for

compliments from others (even sincere ones)? I had WLS for myself and

to a lesser extent my family.

I was commenting at work how one of the graduate students (I work in a

research lab at a University) was going out of his way to help a new

female employee when I couldn't get him to do a darn thing for me. Our

system administrator said " but she's cute " . The rest of that sentiment

is obvious... " and you're not " . Jerk. Just wait, I'll show them.

She's not really cute, just thin. And he's really overweight and

unattractive himself. I tell myself " I may be fat, but you're ugly and

I can always lose weight. " . OK not very PC, but it makes me feel

better in a mean spirited way.

OK, vent over.

Oh I could care less about there " compliments " . Like you, I had this

surgery for me. To make me feel good and to be healthy. As long as I

am happy...I don't care what anyone thinks.

Kim,

Don't feel bad. I am with Mike on this one: they are trying, albeit

clumsily, to be encouraging... I mean, what are they supposed to say...?

" Ohh, by the way, although you were fat and killing yourself before, now you

look healthy although not as pretty?? " I mean... really... what would you

like to hear? Honestly. What would I like to hear??

I drill and drill and drill my brains and can't really come up with any

answers. What are people supposed to say?? I think that just " you look

wonderful " is the appropriate response at seeing you successfully losing the

weight, becoming healthy and seeing you happy.

But Mike, we're girls....it's different for us.

And for me, it's not the backhanded compliment that bugged me. It was

the unstated insult of " But she's cute " to explain why I was treated

differently than a coworker.
