I have the same skin texture you describe. Last Friday I had my first

Photoderm , and several people have commented that my cheeks look smoother. I

also find that washing my face with Nizoral shampoo helps make the pores look

smaller.

Hi Nanette--

Yes, lots of us have this uneven skin texture, which

can best be described as looking like an orange peel.

Photoderm is supposed to help somewhat, but a better

bet would be microdermabrasion, which basically

involves sand-blasting the skin (though newer

techniques are being used now which are not as harsh

as they sound). Microderm can be done in conjunction

with photoderm. The vit A derivatives can help reduce

the appearance of pores, but I believe their action is

usually only temporary. And you definitely don't want

to use a topical vit A preparation--that's usually a

little too harsh for our delicate skins. Be careful,

too, about OTC products that claim to reduce pore

appearance and fine lines, because they often contain

AHAs, which are also tend to be too harsh for us.

I have that uneven look to the texture of my skin,

too, though I suppose it's relatively mild because

when my photoderm clinician was initially discussing

treatment options with me, she told me that I didn't

need microderm. I do notice those pores, though

usually only when I'm in inspection mode and spend

multiple hours with my face pressed up against the

mirror. Photoderm has helped minimize them slightly,

but not as much as I'd like. Still, it's such an

improvement on so many fronts that I feel silly

complaining!

Good luck...

Perhaps this has been true for me alone, but using ZincO has helped

in

eliminating that orange peel look. I think part of it is caused by

inflammation which the ZincO has helped to control. Also, I notice I

have it when my mild seb derm reappears. I have been able to control

the seb derm through using more water to rinse after washing my face.

,

I'm using it mostly in the morning. I put just a

little of the untinted ZincO sample Dr. Sy gave me on

my nose at night.

Hi Nanette,

I had that same raised, rough skin texture - but mostly on one side of my

face. Since photoderm, that texture is improved a lot (probably 90%) and

both sides of my face look the same now! The large pores aren't totally

eliminated, and one cheek still has thickening in the skin, but on the

surface the texture is much, much smoother. Good luck with your treatments,

Jen

Hi Matija,

Wold it be safe to use regular store bought zinc oxide on my face or does it

have to be a specefic brand. I'd like to try it for that unhealthy look my

skin has. What do you think? Or anyone elses opinion would be greatly

appreciated.

Thanks,

Barb

Hi Barb,

Use whatever form of zinc oxide that works the best for you. I

use a zinc oxide ointment that I buy at a local pharmacy. Most drugstores and

supermarkets carry their own brand of zinc ointment that contain 20% zinc

oxide, mineral oil, white wax, and petrolatum. There is also Desitin and

Balmex that some have had good luck with, but they have other ingredients in

them other than the ones that I listed above. I reacted to both. Quite a few

people in this group have had good results with ZincO. I reacted to both

versions of ZincO. Whatever you try test it out in a small area first to make

sure that you dont react.

Zinc oxide ointment (or most products that contain zinc oxide

as the active ingredient) will help protect the skin, reduce the redness,

prevent and heal bumps, and act as a sunscreen. It helps the skin heal, but

it only goes so far with improving the texture of the skin. Ive been using

zinc oxide ointment for 18 months and it has helped my skin heal and not be

so irritated. It helps keep my skin a bit smoother looking, but I needed to

find cosmetic procedures that would help smooth the texture out even more.

If your skin is inflamed it can cause that orange peel

texture and some are lucky enough to have the texture return to normal once

the inflammation is reduced and the rosacea is somewhat under control. Some

of us arent that lucky. Even though the rosacea has calmed down, we are left

with that rough texture. Thankfully microdermabrasion is available. It has

made a tremendous difference for me. That rough texture that I used to have

is just about gone. I will always use the zinc ointment, but Im realistic

enough to know that I might have to do micro treatments a couple of times a

year. This condition is a fighter, but so am I!

Hey Bill,

I have no acne or redness. I just get this burning, itchy feeling on my face

like a million bugs are crawling all over me aghhhhhh. I do get bumps and my

pores are enlarged. I also have that unhealthy texture to my skin. If I had

acne all my life I could understand this but, when I was a young adult I

never had a pimple and therefore find this hard to deal with. I even remember

the plasric surgeon commenting about my skin to my father when I was 18 yrs.

old and had rhinoplasty performed. He said my skin was like china, smooth and

beautiful. Yes I was a vain person even as a young adult. Isn't it ironic

when you think about it. A vain person such as myself has come down with a

potentially disfiguring disease. Go figure.

what brand zinc oxide (the regular zinc you wrote about, not the zinco)

have you used and where do you buy yours. . Im looking for a zinc oxide that

has more than the normal 40% zinc oxide that is in most of the diaper zinc

oxide products which are also unfortunately have a mixture of other

ingredientl. thanks j

esther, ive been using a white zinc oxide in a tube that ive had for about 20

or so years in the drawer and it is very thick , not creamy, and the company

is no longer in business. It also has no ingredient label so i just assumed

it was greater than 40% zinc oxide and also because it is not creamy like

balmex or desitin which i cant use. I have found that the thick zinc goes on

good at night over my emu oil which i apply first. and then the next morning

i apply the emu oil on a wet face (without washing the zinc off) and the zinc

disappears into the oil so thaere is no need to rub the thick zinc off my

face first and i avoid making my face redder from the rubbing. this i like

but i am running out of my old thick zinc oxide. so i will try to find the

20%you speak about . i dont have the store were you bought yours as i am in

fla but i will look for other drug store standard brands. thanks j
