Normally an Echocardiagram is done by running amonitor across the chest. That way you have to look through bone, muscle and fat. Through the esophagus you get a clearer picture because there is little tissue to obstruct the view. There is a risk of injuring the varices on the way down so it is a risk benefit decision. The sonogram can look somewhat at the varices on the way down but it is not like an EGD.
