Yes you are right, small amounts are just fine BUT you have to take it every

3 hours (you can stretch to 4 at night) round the clock for 3 days. Andy's

recommended doses are 1/8 - 1/2 mg ALA per pound of person per dose. Any silver

fillings need to be removed and 3 months waiting after before you start

HTH

Mandi in UK

Lots of info in the files section :)

Firstly, what are the drawbacks to using ALA on it's own? It's

ability to chelate the brain seems to make it the catch-all, perfect

chelator.

I found ALA (Alpha Lipoic Acid)in Holland & Barrett (UK) and it was on

special offer so I picked up a bottle, even though it will be a

while before I am ready to take it. The label directs you to take

one or two caps per day. Haven't I read somewhere that it is

dangerous to just take small amounts like this? They are 30mg

capsules.

I don't know of any to speak of.

There are a couple of drawbacks of using it, period, but I don't

think it matters about alone or not alone--- the drawbacks I know

of apply either way. These include:

a. high sulfur (good for some people, bad for others)

b. do not use after recent mercury exposure (e.g. amalgam replacement)

Wait at least 3 months.

c. need to take every 3 hours

d. can cause yeast

That is what comes to mind.

It is the timing that is the issue. See item c above.

Apparently, using DMSA can reduce the side effects of ALA.

And folks who've had recent exposure (like amalgam removal) can start with DMSA

to get mercury out of the body before it's safe for them to use ALA. It is fine

to use ALA alone.

I didn't use DMSA. It is more expensive, less available, and

bad for your liver.

If I had lead I would use it, and I did buy some to try it out

for a couple of rounds.

I'll be giving my son DMSA starting next weekend. He just had 3

fillings removed. He is 8yrs old. We found out about his toxicity

~6months ago. I feel like time is wasting away. That is why he'll

be taking DMSA. I can't wait another 3 months just doing nothing!

Yep, that makes total sense.

A couple of comments back in this thread I stated several limits

on ALA, including the don't-use-for-several-months-after-mercury-exposure

one. What you are doing makes great sense.

Once the three months are up and it is safe to use ALA, is it just

as good at getting rid of the mercury as DMSA?

Another though: Is mercury the only toxic metal which can show low

on a hair test even if your body burden is high?

Jodie,

The ALA recommendations are probably also in the file section on the

left hand side of the page.

Basically, 1/8-1/2 mg per lb of weight. Start with the lower end of

the dose. Dose every THREE hours around the clock for 72 hours; take

at least 72 hours off. So, if you decide to give the 25 mgs (how

much does he weigh?), you would give 25 mgs every 3 hours for 72

hours.

For me, side effects were related to trying to extend the dosing time

out to every 4-5 hours at night. I got headaches. I'm not headache

prone, so this was significant for me. The pain was smack on the top

of my head. Fatigue, too, most likely from having trouble falling

back asleep after the night time doses.

ALA can stir up yeast if you are not careful (and even if you are

careful). So, other side effects can be yeast overgrowth related.

So far, my son hasn't seen any bad things with ALA; only good. I've

been giving him 20 mgs. He weighs 49 lbs.

Others will have to answer the dental questions. I know metal caps

can hide unwanted metals.

protocol for giving it to my son. Also, what sort of side-effects

should I look for? I have been reading here that I should give every

3 hrs in the day and every 4 hrs in the night. My pills are 100 mg.

Does that mean I cut them up into 4 - 25mg doses? So that I end up

giving 25mg at each interval? How long should I continue? I plan on

a 24 hour period. My son doesn't have any mercury amalgams, the

dental assistant insisted they don't use that anymore but that his

caps were stainless steel, is that a problem? Any answers you could

give would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, I have the ALA and would like to know where to find the

protocol for giving it to my son.

*In the FAQs of this list.

Also, what sort of side-effects should I look for?

*Yeast may increase, so have a good yeast protocol in place or on stand-by.

I have been reading here that I should give every 3 hrs in the day and every 4

hrs in the night.

Yes, for at least 3 days and nights on and at least as long off.

My pills are 100 mg. Does that mean I cut them up into 4 - 25mg doses? So

that I end up giving 25mg at each interval?

*Depends upon how much the person to be chelated weighs. If the person weighs

100-200 lbs this would be an appropriate amount to start with. If the person

weighs less you would need to use a lower dose. Do you have capsule or tablets?

ALA comes in lower dosages, so perhaps next time you can find 50 mg or less caps

so there's less dividing to do.

How long should I continue? I plan on a 24 hour period.

*That's not long enough and would provide an opportunity for the mercury to

redistribute into the brain. See above. For an individual in school most do

Friday afternoon to Monday morning which is 2.6 days and ok.

My son doesn't have any mercury amalgams, the dental assistant insisted they

don't use that anymore but that his caps were stainless steel, is that a

problem? Any answers you could give would be greatly appreciated.
*Andy has said it's ok to chelate with stainless steel caps, just make sure he

doesn't have any amalgam under the caps.

Collin is 46 lbs. so I would give just under 25 mg. per dose, as I understand.

I think I will try the Friday to Sunday approach, since he goes to preschool

during the week. Thanks so much.

Jodie, I think I would recommend starting lower than that just to be on

the safe side. My son is about the same weight, and he gets 12 mg of

ALA (plus 8 mg of DMSA) per dose. This is after a year of chelation -

we started at 8 mg of both ALA and DMSA. Most parents work up to 1/2

mg per lb over time, if they choose to go that high.

best wishes

Jodie,

I agree with Rene, my son who is 63 lbs is only at 20 mgs per dose... when I

went higher, it seemed to be too much for him. Safer to start lower.
