Hyperactive/Stimming on Methylcobalomin

Yesterday morning we started to introduce methylcobalamin to our 24

month old, 30 lb son. We started with about 250 mcg, spread out

throughout the day. We are seeing some hyperactivity and more

stimming, last night and today. Nothing too scary, but there's a

definite negative behavior difference.

What is the next step, should we give it another day to see if he

adjusts to that dosage, should we pull back, maybe cut the dose in

half, or should we cut back completely, and restart in a few days

with a lower dose?

Thanks,

-

This is about how much oral B12 I give my #3 son, age 6, about 45

pounds. If I give more than this, he has major emotional problems and

bangs his head. It might be too much for your child. I would stop

for a few days, then try again, half this dose or less.

What form of MB12 are you using. From what I've read, the most

effective treatment is via subcutaneous injections on a two to three

times a week regimen. I am a compounding pharmacist and prepare this

on a regular basis for patients in my area. Let me know if you have

any more questions.

At the time, we were using oral hypoallergenic capsules, dumping the

contents into rice milk and dividing the dose throughout the day

that way. We pulled him off the b12, then reintroduced a very small

amount, and again had a reaction, plus a slight rash on his face.

The brand name is " Pure Encapsulations, " and according to the label

it's free of everything. The doctor prescribing it is pretty

careful about what brands he recommends.

I'm thinking it's the b12 itself that he's sensitive to, and an

injection would seem to provoke the same effect. But maybe the

issue is in his gut?

We have moved on to directly address his gut issues, and I think we

will come back to the B12 later. Are the injections a " safer " path

to take?

Aboput 1 person in 7 does poorly on B-12, with agitation or

hyperactivity or (in crazy adults) worsening of psychiatric symptoms.

This is somewhat dose dependent and anyone can get there if given

enough B-12, particularly methyl-B-12.

The " right amount " of B-12 for people is wildly more than an RDA on

average, but does vary dramatically from person to person.

No.

Unfortunately many physicians do not accurately report what their

patients experience to those who aren't seeing people clinically but

depending on the doc's for good information. MOST people do real well

on goodly amounts of B-12. A few doo poorly. The number doing poorly

probably goes up modestly with vast increases in the B-12 dose.

Are you also supplementing with Folinic Acid, 800 mcg. I was told

you need them (methyl B-12 and Folinic Acid)together. Take care,

Becky in Chesapeake, VA
