Guest guest
Hi all, I have an idea that I am researching. This is for the ones in my various yahoo groups with at least one of the above mentioned problems PLUS Autonomic Dysreflexia (AD) symptoms. Some have hypertension (HTN) or hypotension. Me, I have both hypertension & hypotension. Autonomic Dysreflexia (AD) can be caused by something as simple as a full bladder, bowel distension, wrinkled sheets or too tight clothes. Actually, anything above your level of injury or nerve damage can be a Dysreflexia trigger. Sometimes your " noxious stimulus " or unfelt pain to the skin -- that which you can no longer feel ... is the cause. Well, now, when you are having your redness, sweating and other Dysreflexia symptoms you will want to check what your BP is. That is good. But what if that very check up is adding to the your Dysreflexia? Perhaps the very blood pressure (BP) cuff; the correct size cuff of course, is a trigger of the very Dysreflexia. But by the time your arm has been squeezed for two minutes you now have your higher BP. Triggered or otherwise. For the Spinal Cord Injured (SCI), Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) person with their typical low blood pressure, if you have AD, what if that high reading is even HIGHER due to the very action of a tight painful cuff? Finally in the case of an EDS person, their softer arm might make things even worse. For the person who has unilateral renal agenesis or kidney problems with or without dehydration, the skin can become soft due to poor skin turgor. So, again the same question. You got a cuff squeezing your too soft skin. THE BEST WAY TO KNOW IF THERE IS A DIFFERENCE would be to have your usual manual or automatic BP digital monitor AND a wrist or finger BP type machine. Borrow your jogger friend's wrist model and let me know. I am looking to see if others get a difference in their tests. This is just a study I am doing for myself. Any response would be appreciated. COMMENT: Years ago I once had my regular hand pump BP machine and a finger and wrist machine. There was a BIG difference between the two readings when taking one after the other. Back then I did not know I had chronic Dysreflexia problems or EDS. Heck, I did not know I had only one kidney until I was forty years old. Again, thank you in advance for your input. Meanwhile, I am saving up for a wrist BP monitor :-D. Thank you.
