Sponsor - Religious Overtones

I don't recall anyone mentioning this so forgive if I'm rehashing old

sentiment. Even the word sponsor has religious overtones. Although I'm

still unable to place AA's propensity for refusing to take responsibility

for anyone but themselves and then only in context of what AA's dogma allows

them to do, into this concept of sponsorship.

I mean how can someone take responsibility for someone else if the entire

purpose of the program is selfish as is said so often. Even if it weren't

selfish we're still stuck with people who refuse to accept responsibility

for their own behavior in favor of the easier softer disease highway. How

can someone like that hope to accept responsibility for another and if

someone thought they could wouldn't thinking so clash with the humility

concepts spoken of so frequently in the rewms?

sponsor \Spon " sor\, n. [L., from spondere, sponsum, to engage one's self.

See Spose.]

1. One who binds himself to answer for another, and is responsible for his

default; a surety.

2. One who at the baptism of an infant profess the christian faith in its

name, and guarantees its religious education; a godfather or godmother.
