Guest guest
I read a great book called " Milk, Money and Madness, the Politics and Culture of Breastfeeding " and it describes all of this as well as the story behind the picture. I got it at my library, really great reading. Michele Re: " Bottlefeeding Without Guilt " In the article on this website (http://www.oneworld.org/ni/issue275/nestle.html), it tells how Nestle gives the hospitals in 3rd world countries (not here...) formula for free so that the babies are all started on formula. Then once the mothers get home...the formula costs 1/2 their income so they can't afford it. They then water it down.... There is a picture that shows twins, the boy was bf, the girl was ff. The girl died the day after the picture was taken... The mother was told that there was no way she could produce enough to bf both babies...Sad world we are living in... --- Jsachieve@... wrote: > From: Jsachieve@... > > That is really disgusting that parents would give their babies less than > the recommended amount of formula to save money- Very disgusting! > S. > > ---------------------------
Guest guest
Patty, Actually Nestle does give free samples here in the states. It is actually worse here than a lot of places because our government does nothing to protect us. This is one of my personal sore points. I boycott Nestle and all their subsidiary companies as a result of their horrid behavior. Giving free samples is really the least of it. The woman in the picture was told by her mother in law that she wouldn't make enough milk. In countries like Pakistan no one would have let her jeopardize the health of the boy to save the girl. It is so sad and just infuriates me that this stuff is going on all around us. How many of you got free samples, coupons, or enticements from formula companies on checking out of the hospital? Guest guest
I guess I must have delivered at a breast-friendly hospital. I got a diaper bag, but it had diaper samples in it. I also got a cooler bag that had bm storage bottles in it and a cheap manual pump. I did get one tiny can of formula, mix I think. I probably got coupons too but I really don't remember any. I agree with the nestle boycott, I never realized how many companies they had though and I'm afraid i have not been able to completely stick to it (my son LOVES Cheerios), but I do what I can. I have also turned my sister from a probable ff'er to a definite bf'er and I think that's even more important. Kids probably wouldn't care however.
