Cory is just now at almost a year (few days away!!!!) starting to eat table

foods. Absoloutely refused baby cereal and baby foods. So we nursed only

for about 11 months. He still only eats about 6 or 7 finger shoves at a

sitting.

With Arran I went " by the book " starting solids on a strict schedule set out in

the baby books using jarred baby food lol So he was about 11 months before he

started eating things like fish sticks and french fries, pasta and other table

foods but once he started he refused all baby foods. Keely was not interested

in solid food until she was 10 months old. She liked things like Mingos (little

cheese snacks like yogurt) and cheerios but only a tiny bit. Once she hit 10

months she started eating a lot and we were making things like sheperd's pie and

casseroles for her, everything for Keely was homemade. With both I didn't start

peanut butter until after one year, I know some people wait until 3 years before

introducing peanut butter because of allergies.

Starting solids

Hi everybody-

Just a quick question. I can't remember when I started my first two on

finger foods (the memory left me after number three was born). When did you

all start yours on foods such as cheese, pb & j, cheerios etc.

,

I will state some general guidelines that I have followed. Don't start any

solids until at least 6 months. Babies don't have the hydrochloric acid

needed to digest in their stomach until around 6 months. Many babies are

not ready for solids until much later. Some babies don't really take to

solids until around 18 months. Some of the food readiness signs are having

teeth, sitting unassisted (on the floor not just in a high chair), grabbing

for food, no tongue-thrust reflex, able to grab food get it to mouth and

swallow it-unassisted, high interest in the social activity of eating. The

easiest way to start is to fork mash a bit of your own food on your plate

and hold your baby. Allow her/him to grab and smear and get in as much as

possible. It isn't pretty but it assures you that your baby is ready and

able to handle solids. If the only way a baby is getting solids is to have

boiled pureed food spooned in, there is a chance that baby isn't truly

ready for solids. Baby food is a by product of the formula industry.

Formula fed babies weren't getting adequate nutrition and needed more but

weren't physically ready for solids. The solution, pureed, jarred baby

food. Breastfed babies aren't nutritionally deprived so solids can be

approached in a much more relaxed way. Allowing a baby to choose its own

foods from a few healthy choices and to put in as much as it likes is much

healthier than shoveling in a measured amount of pureed food. Babies like

the texture of foods that are more like ours. Most of us wouldn't want to

eat jarred baby foods and many babies don't want to either. Some of the

more allergenic foods to avoid in the first year are dairy, wheat, soy,

citrus, nuts, chocolate, and strawberries. Many suggest waiting until at

least 3-5 years for peanuts, especially if you have a family history.

Cheerios are made from oats and were great during the no wheat stage. We

came up with a lot of alternative foods. Sweet potatoes and avocados are

great first finger foods. Rice should be avoided until at least 9 months

as it isn't very digestible until then. Starting with soft cooked

vegetables is a great way to get your baby going on solids without risking

allergies. What a sweet little son you have. :D Hope this helps.

Well, reading all of your messages (digest format) sure makes me feel better

about wanting to STOP

giving solids to !

I'm not wishing infancy away, but I can't wait to hear something like that from

. Right now

I do get the same gist from his looks and smiles though.

> So we nursed only for about 11 months.

This might become the route we are going to take. Although most of the people I

talk to tell me

that I need to keep giving solids to him so he can " learn " to eat. I think that

is a load of

garbage...am I right or wrong?

> Don't start any solids until at least 6 months.

This is what the La Leche League and the American Academy of Pediatrics say

also, but my ped is

telling me 4 months...go figure...I put off trying until 5 months, but like I

said...we are going

to stop for now and maybe try again when he is 6 months.

> Babies don't have the hydrochloric acid needed to digest in their stomach

months.

I hadn't been told that before, but I did know they weren't able to digest

solids ok until after 4

(that was what I was told anyway...)

floor not just in

a high chair), grabbing for food, no tongue-thrust reflex, able to grab food get

has 2 teeth (bottom front), can sit for a few fleeting moments by

himself on the floor,

grabs at my food, cup, spoon, still does the tongue-thrust (assuming that is

what it is called

when the food comes almost right back out), he can grab a spoon and get it to

his mouth...not sure

about the swallowing...some comes right back out, but a lot goes down, he is a

highly social

baby...he loves attention!

What do you think? Is he ready? I'm still not sure or convinced of whether he is

ready or not, but

plan on stopping to be better safe than sorry.

> Most of us wouldn't want to eat jarred baby foods and many babies don't want

to either.

I tasted the jarred bananas that we gave him last night...they don't even come

close to even

tasting like bananas! No wonder most of the people in this world are picky

eaters (I know I am!)

> If I understood Wendi correctly, it's not necessary to use baby food? Can I

just mash up veggies

and that will work?

That is what I have been told too. The La Leche League leader told me if we buy

boxed or canned

stuff to make sure that it has 3 or less ingredients. I think because it is

closer to natural. She

said the best bet is to buy fresh fruits, veggies, meats (when the time

comes...when is that?).

Then use a blender or food processor to get it mashed up.

> Thank you to everyone for the advice.

Thanks for asking...I had the same questions, but hadn't gotten around to

posting!

> I think I will wait another month or two and then start some different things

I'm right there with ya...I'm stopping the solids until later! will be 6

months on the

30th. We *might* try again then...if it doesn't go any better...we will wait

until 7 months.

Patty,

I cannot pretend to think that I can tell you when your son is ready or

not. You are the best judge of that. I would say from his tongue-thrust

(yes, that's what it is called) alone that that is a huge sign of him not

being ready. You certainly won't hurt him by stopping solids. Babies will

absolutely demand solids when they are ready. They will also somewhat

accept them when they aren't. I personally think it is better to wait too

long to start solids then starting them too early. Follow your heart and

your son's guide and you will find what works for your family. :D

I started Trenton a little while ago (yes jars of baby food - eeekk). He

really loves it, I only give him a meal at night, and he normally shouts for

more when the jar is empty!

I am dying to start making my own food for him, I am just a little nervous of

him choking or gagging if I don't mash it up enough. I plan to start giving

him 2 meals a day when he gets to about 6 months old.

I was rather eager to start him on solids, but then I realized that it just

makes everything a lot more complicated, it makes it a lot more difficult if

we want to go out shopping or visiting etc. that is why I have just stuck

with the one meal to date.

Perhaps like Patty I might stop or slow down on regular meals. Has anyone

done this before? I would like to know what if any effects there are to

doing that.

It's easier than you think! If you really want to make all baby food for him

use a food processor or hand mixer to get the big lumps out!

I think most first time moms are the same as you (I was!)

He'll be fine! I started on cereal at 5 mos but he wanted no part of

it so I stooped :)
